For those interested in Coventry's Blitz, probably the most definitive book written about it has turned up at a very decent starting price on eBay.
It's called Air Raid, by Norman Longmate, and provided me with more facts and material than any other book I could find. But don't all go bidding against each other, will you! |

I think you'll enjoy it, it's a smashing little history book with a sprinkling of lovely old photos and images.
Hi Rob - This is a great book, I agree
I used to have it, but I lent it to someone who subsequently died and I hadn't the heart to ask his family to pass it back.
Will have to look on ebay to see if they have another bargain copy

I am not sure if you would be able to afford this one on ebay, not the story of Coventry as such. It shows the history of Coventry etc., scroll down and it will show you more.

In case anyone hasn't seen it, Trinity Mirror have issued a publication entitled "Coventry - Frame by Frame" - it costs £4.99 but it includes some interesting photos - and a couple of errors, of course!
One photo stands out for me, a double page aerial shot of the city centre in 1965, which shows the old baths still standing in Priory Street whilst the new Fairfax Street has opened - so the position of the baths, as Sir Rob has previously told us, can clearly be seen to be where the Gala Bingo now stands
Worth looking at as an addition to anyone's collection of Coventry books
The first one, with more promised - I have a number of their similar publications on Liverpool which are excellent, so hopefully they will keep their undertaking to publish further editions
Should be available in newsagents! |

Some of you might have seen the super pre-war and wartime memories of Norman Cohen on this page of Historic Coventry?
Well, Norman has now had his memoirs published officially, and his book can be ordered form Amazon via this Local Authors webpage.
I've ordered myself a copy already, and look forward to a great read very soon - I hope some of you do, too. |

'A History of Coventry' by Benjamin Poole
For anyone interested this (expensive in the original) book is currently available on E-Bay from New York at a price of around £17 in a soft cover. Not sure about postages. I have loose unbound copies (they were issued weekly) of most of it, donated to me by the late Frank Harris of Stoke. It is a mine of information on Coventry.
It's also known as Taunton's History of Coventry. I think he was the publisher. |

For some years now, John Ashby's "The Character of Coventry" has been the essential reference book on Coventry's pubs, and I know that several of us on here have copies - many of them starting to fall apart from such constant use.
Well, I'm pleased to be able to let it be known that a replacement is about to be printed. The new book will be much larger (A4 size) and contain far more pubs and information than before. I would think that this will become the new standard on the subject.
Please find below more details direct from the author(s)... I hope many of you will be queuing up for a copy!
A THOUSAND YEARS OF COVENTRY PUBSWHY NOT COME T0 THE OFFICIAL LAUNCH ON SATURDAY 18th OCTOBER 2014 AT THE COVENTRY HISTORY CENTRE 11AM - 1PM The wealth and depth of research into this long awaited book is quite astonishing. The text runs to well over a hundred pages together with another hundred pages showing some two hundred photographs. Without doubt it is a staple reference and a 'must' for anyone who is interested in Coventry's pubs, past and present. As Jim Witt of CAMRA points out, we need to understand just how important is the public house - not just a place to drink, but as the social hub of the community. Where else can groups meet for social interaction as is provided by the well-regulated public house? Printed in A4 format and priced at £13 it is a bargain. The major retail outlet is the Coventry History Centre located at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum. A small number of pubs will also have copies available. Copies can be ordered on the following e-mail addresses: John1937@ntlworld.com and gfluckett@o2.co.uk Note; Delivery is free in Coventry - the cost of postage and packing is too prohibitive. Many years ago while at Cov Prep, we had to learn about the history of Coventry, and this was the book.. Coventry's Heritage As history changes as we find out more, it would be interesting to compare whet it says with what we know now. I used to have a copy but like all of the rest of my personal belongings, it became a victim of a messy divorce.. |
