My cousin, Tony Whitehead, has just alerted me re a recent book on an incident in Stoke Park in 1906. It was a time when Marlborough Road was no more than a dirt track. There are some line-drawn maps included. He will obtain a copy for me when I attend his 90th at the end of December.
Review: [Anne Cryer-Whitehead on Jun 28, 2022 - Well, what can I say about this fantastic book. I couldn't put it down as it really is engaging and a pure pleasure to read. What I loved is the social history interwoven with the story. Adam is an amazing storyteller. I recommend anyone to buy it.] |

It's a super little book, Prof, especially of local interest to us Stoke folk! |

I contacted the Herbert for details of the book on the Charterhouse, and ordered a copy.
The book was published in 1995 by Coventry City Council. It is an A4 size book of 148 pages with contributions from Iain Soden and Margaret Rylatt amongst others. There are illustrations throughout the text. £2 plus postage. |

I keep trying to persuade the Herbert to advertise what they've got for sale. There's one on West Orchard I fancy. |

If you do a search on eBay, you'll find other copies with a picture of the front and maybe inside. I wasn't very impressed with it but it didn't add to my knowledge of the old city, so I was biased against it. The images weren't particularly good quality. |

I think the book Coventry Memories is the one published in association with the Jag. Helen is correct, it is not much about old Coventry, probably war time and post war. It is sponsored by various Coventry companies, separate articles about these companies. There are a lot of pictures but just flicking through I would think that most of them we have seen before in one way or another. |

I had some correspondence with Robert at the Herbert, who was most helpful. I sent for the A4 £2 book on the Charterhouse, which is in fact a detailed account of excavations there 1968-87. Whilst it is of course illustrated throughout with the findings, there is just one photo of the still existing range, and another interesting one of two alabaster statues later at one time on the altar of St Osburgs. Though technical I found it of interest. Postage £5 but arrived next day! |

I ordered both of these books. one on the 28th and one on the 29th, longest delivery was 5th December. Two books from two different companies.
As I hadn't received either of them, I chased both of them yesterday and within an hour had a full refund from both people. The strange thing is, the apology letters are identical and signed by the same person!!Mick Strong

Number of possibilities.
1. The post - I'm missing two cards that should have turned up by now (days ago) but haven't - the prompt refund might be a genuine desire not to create trouble.
2. They are the same organisation pretending to be different suppliers, hence the identical letter.
3. They're buying from a common supplier.
4. Something more sinister. It might be worth contacting eBay and telling them what's happened. There are other copies of the Iain Soden book at a slightly higher price from World of Books that I have bought from ok. I have had books at one price reappear at a higher price. |

Hi Helen
The other option that is more likely, is that they never had the books to deliver in the first place? Mick Strong
