Does anyone remember, or have any stories regarding Johnny Medlock? He is (was) my great uncle and I haven't seen him since my mother's funeral in 2003. He was married to my Aunt Rose and lived, I believe, in Station Street. It was said that if you gave Johnny a strange instrument, he would be able to play it after 10 minutes. He also played at the opening of Cox Street club when Her Majesty the Queen was there. He was told that he MUST NOT talk to her. When HM came close to where Johnny was playing, he was heard to say "Alright me duck. Are you having a good time". I believe he played with his "combo" as well. Any info would be appreciated

I knew Johnny when I was a lad. He worked part time at Beamish's on the Foleshill Road as a van driver, delivering televisions and radiograms. I was the apprentice sent along to provide the muscle. Always a happy chap, and as I recall something of a ladies man, black hair slicked back into a quiff and sideburns, a larger than life character who would just discard whatever he was doing to play the piano in a house if they had one when we arrived there.

I knew Johnny Medlock and Rose - they played at Cox Street Club, and also the Captains Table and Indian Restaurant in Hillfields. They were both at my wedding in 1985. John was a lot of fun - and he was a very popular organist in Coventry during the 70's 80's and 90's - playing at numerous venues around the city. My ex husband Alan Shepherd used to play the Sax with him at some gigs. Rose sang at my wedding reception - Blanket on the Ground if I remember rightly.
