That gearbox fault sounds like a Triumph Herald gearbox. There was a nylon washer or bush at the base of the gear lever and when it became a bit worn the gear change would become more and more sloppy and it was harder to find each gear.

Hi
My son has bought a house on Broad Lane, Coventry, next door to the old service station (Henley's) and saw your comment as you working there. Do you have any pics of the site or maps etc so I can show my son as interested in history of the petrol station?
Hope you can help.

Hi Tim. Great picture of the garage at Tollbar, late 50's/early 60's? My interest is the Messerschmitt Bubblecar which can be seen fueling up. I own a red 1960 Messerschmitt Bubblecar which has featured on the forum before and have tried zooming into the picture to see if the reg. no. is visible, to no avail. I wondered whether it is visible on the original photo?
I believe the cars were available through Light Cars of Coventry (Astons) and also Frettons at Leamington Spa. There were half a dozen or so on the roads of Coventry when I was growing up in the sixties. Great to see.

Hector 1, I presume you know a member of my local classic car club (Bulkington), who has one, I'm not going to name him here, he lives in Coventry.

If the person you refer to is into Morgan's steam railways, folding caravans etc, yes I know him very well. He had his original Messerschmitt in the late 1960s so will not be the one in the Tollbar photo.
For your information, there are several Messerschmitts dotted about the city.

I have just read this section of the site for the first time. I noticed that the first post mentioned Coventry Garage on the Holyhead Road. My uncle (Les Swain) was the sales director there until he died following a heart attack. For obvious reasons my first three or four second hand cars were all purchased from there.
My regular garage for servicing and petrol was the Leicester Garage on Leicester Causeway, it was run by two brothers Bob and Bill Turrell, both really nice guys always very helpful. Whilst cruising around Google Street View on a nostalgic binge the other evening, I was amazed to see that there is still a garage on the same site called 'Bob & Bills'. I am now left wondering if these are relatives of the Bob & Bill that I knew back in the 60's or has the name just been adopted?
It was 9 years ago you posted about them, scribe (hopefully you are still on here!) but...........

I'm still playing catch up with many of the older posts.
I do recall the Toll Bar Shell garage, and if I recall correctly, that was the Coventry head office for the group which also owned and operated the former Shell garage on Tile Hill Lane almost opposite the Co-op, now houses, and also the former Mount Nod Filling Station, on the corner of Broad Lane, also now houses.....

Anyone remember the old Henley's garage on the corner of Broad Lane and Jobs lane? Brings me back to my younger days. Think it closed down in about 1980 and was abandoned for a long time before new houses got built.
Strangely enough, I'm looking for old photos of the former Henley's Jobs Lane workshops.
It did close in the very early 1980's, along with some other BL dealerships in the Coventry area.
The ones that come to mind
• BEWAC (Bridge Clock Motors as was), part of the Inchcape Group, later to become Mann Egerton, also part of the Inchcape group at the time.
• Parkside
• Henleys
BEWAC was initially an Austin Morris dealership, but as part of the UNIPART and former British Leyland outlets, took on the sales and aftersales support of Jaguar Rover Triumph also known as JRT. As part of the initial logo over the sales showroom, there used to be just the two tick Austin Morris, and then the full five ticks, Austin/Morris/Jaguar/Rover/Triumph. The Austin Morris lettering was white against a blue background while Jaguar Rover Triumph was white against a green background.
There are examples of that logo online, though I've not included any links or images so not to infringe any copyrights.
Sorry, I've digressed, but there is a very rich heritage out there.

Digressing is something we're really good at on the Forum and sometimes it becomes so interesting Helen has to start a whole new thread. That's how it has become this wonderful entity.
