Starting in season 1907-08, Kenilworth had its own football competition, the "Kenilworth Convalescent Home Football Challenge Trophy".
The trophy, which still survives, was donated by Captain James Charles Stringer, one-time equal partner with George Singer in Singer Cars. Indeed, Singer married Stringer's sister.
Coventry teams did well in the competition which was open to teams from a ten mile radius from Kenilworth.
The first two seasons it was won by Leamington Town (who then withdrew) and Kenilworth Town won it on four occasions, but virtually all the other winners were from Coventry.
The Coventry winners were:
West Orchard SS - 1912
Coventry Chain Athletic - 1913
Stoke Albion - 1914
Barras Green - 1920 and 21
Bell Green Wesleyans - 1922
'Dairymen' (who are probably rather than certainly a Coventry team) - 1933
Courtaulds Thursdays - 1934 and 35.
There were no competitions between 1923 and 1932 when it re-emerged as a Thursday competition, Thursday then being early closing day. 1935 was the last final.
This is really just for interest only for those interested in local sports teams, but in the unlikely event that anyone knows anything of any of the Coventry winners, please add a post! |

Hi Robin
My book: "The Vocalists - A History Of Singers Football Club 1883 to 1898" carries a small feature on James Charles Stringer and the Singer Company.
I refer to the Challenge Cup donated by Stringer. I have never seen a photograph of the trophy, so thanks to you this has been rectified! I am amazed the trophy still exists and would dearly love to see it.
Unfortunately I have no information on Coventry winners of the trophy. |
