Coventry Buses - past and present

Thanks mcsporran. I just took the date from the London site, I expect they were just guessing by the date of the blitz, but as Kaga pointed out there would have been more rubble in 1940. The picture still would not have been taken by Owen Owen's though as in October 1943 there was still 150 tons of rubble on the site.

In relation to that earlier shot...

Today had been the last one for the 'travelshop' in Pool Meadow. It has now closed permanently. Altered immensely over the years since it was first opened by the 'West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive', in 1974. Having used it from it's opening and many times since then, I just had to visit today. A little sad that the signage was removed before today, so pleased I took this last week.

I wonder if anybody on this brilliant forum actually knew personally, a "Mrs ELLEN LEE" from Sandy Lane, who was once the owner of this old Coventry Corporation Travel Concession Permit ? (Be great if someone did, or better still, if a relative of hers was even a forum member on here!!!!!). And here's a picture of "Mrs ELLEN LEE" herself, seen here on a later "WEST MIDLANDS PTE" Bus Pass that she once owned!

A "WEST MIDLANDS PTE" Bus Pass here from 1979, which was formerly owned by a "GLADYS WHEATCROFT"! (does anybody here on the forum once know her at all???).

A slightly different looking "WEST MIDLANDS PTE" Bus Pass here this time, which as you can see was once owned by a "Mrs E. PENZER"!!!! (anybody on the forum remember her at all???).

Hi all, If you ever wondered what happens to buses when they are scrapped, this video may give some clues. Several Coventry & West Midlands buses finished up here in Barnsley. Bus scrap yard video. One still has No13a Whitemore Park on the display blind, but sadly, it may have made its last journey. Hold tight!

Another little ditty. I used to catch the bus in Jesson Street, which I am almost sure was a fare stage bus stop. No idea where I was going to now but I know both buses went along Stoney Stanton Road, one went left and via Eagle Street went up Foleshill Road, the other turned right and went up Harnall Lane East, then Swan lane through Stoke Heath and then? Just remembered, Blackberry Lane, but no idea where the terminus was.

Hi Scrutiny, Blackberry Lane would be the 22 to Little Heath, terminus at Old Church Road. I remember, 1960ish being in a logjam of traffic at the five ways junction, nobody could reverse because of queues of cars behind them. I had a grandstand view of the ensuing chaos from the front seat on the top deck of a 21 bus from Stoney Stanton Road heading to town via Jesson Street.

Thanks for that mcsporran, I was a painter & decorator on the council in the sixties and must have used all the bus services. There were council houses all over Cov even in the private estates. When you use that many buses, maybe only that week, you tend to forget where they run through. Jesson Street and Cox Street were my main buses along with Pool Meadow. At 17 I got four wheels under me, end of buses, thank goodness. Saved a fortune in bus fares and spent a bigger one running my car, well an A35 yellow van.

Bus service reduction news.

The first terminus for route 22 was Purcell Road, adjacent to Sewall Highway. It was introduced whilst I was still in the prep school, coinciding with the arrival of the CV6 Metro Cam buses, the last dd's, with rear exit & conductors (those buses were still arriving in batches right up to the early sixties). I loved the route of it travelling past the Coventry steam sheds in Quinton Road. If I was early enough, I travelled to school on it, so as to see the locos, then have quite a lengthy walk back up to Warwick Road. Worth it in dry summer weather.

We lived in Proffitt Avenue and used the 21 service to town during the 50s and 60s, getting on at the junction of Sewall Highway and Bell Green Road. We then used the 22 when the route was extended up to the top of Proffitt Ave and Old Church Road. We looked forward to seeing the model village and the large bomb leaning against the wall of the house at the junction of Swancroft Road and Swan Lane, supposedly pulled from the canal. The 22 was handy for Highfield Road as well but a bit of a bunfight to get onboard coming back from the match. Just looked on Google maps at that house, different now.

Still on the "bus route" posting. Was talking to my sister this morning, about the 1960's, I guess. She reckons that she caught the number 7 bus home to Sewall Highway from Pool Meadow. I have a memory of catching the number 7 bus home from town, outside The Coventry Theatre. Any thoughts? Not sure where it dropped you off inbound (from Sewall Highway), but do not recall it going into Pool Meadow.
