The east and west windows were destroyed in the blitz, replaced after the Deum window in the west, the Brides window in the east. But what were they before the blitz? In Canterbury Cathedral I saw a stained glass window of Adam digging his garden, the background being yellow, the old spades were wooden, eventually a metal blade was added like a shoe. I thought as a child I had seen the picture in some Coventry church? 1978 the Sunday Express published Adam the gardener book, week by week gardening, also a yellow background. 1950's in Pompeii I saw the ruins of a Roman palace, mosaic floors, marble veneers, richly painted walls, columns topped with carved capitals, all looking down to a view of the sea. 1970's in Fishbourne near Chichester, I saw the ruins of a likewise palace, mosaic floors, traces of formal gardens, a cloister, colonnaded walkways divided by an avenue 40 feet long, probably with grassy lawns either side, the land between the palace levelled, all looking down to a view of the sea as at Pompeii.

I have this postcard of the pre-war east window Thumbs up The Victorian window was destroyed in the Blitz in 1940. The present window was designed by Sir Ninian Comper and is known as the "Brides window". This is because all those married at Holy Trinity after the end of war were asked to make a donation to the window's reconstruction. The west window was also destroyed in 1940. I don't recall seeing an image of it Sad This is another stunning window which replaced Victorian glass blown out in November 1940. Designed by portrait artist Hugh Easton and dedicated in 1955, it is known as the Te Deum window. Christ in Majesty sits on a rainbow, with his feet on the world.

Midland Red, Of course I meant to say, replaced after the war, with the Brides window and the Te deum window. Thank you for the picture of the before the war window, and no, Adam is not there, the stained glass windows of Canterbury Cathedral have to be seen to be believed. Did you visit Berwick church while in Sussex? The biblical scenes painted by Vanessa Bell were of local people in wartime clothing, I was led to understand as a child, the images painted on walls and in windows of medieval churches function was to instruct the faithful. The unlearned that could only look.

Yes Kaga you are right when most were illiterate they could learn the Bible stories from stained glass windows and wall paintings. At Fairford Church, Gloucestershire is a fine set of windows. One has Eve being temped by the devil, seen as a fox, to eat the forbidden fruit. There is also a Doom window with a red frightful jaws of hell consuming the damned, while the righteous go up to heaven.
