Have just looked thru the schools section and am amazed that no mention is made of John Gulson School in Leicester Causeway. I attended the school before the war as a junior (5yr old) and later in 1944 until 1948. The school had been badly damaged during the war & was buttressed with large timbers, also the top storey had been cleared & converted into an open air area where sports were held. The headmaster was the famous "Pip" Le Quesne. I still have my original JG school cap! Also I have a large picture of all the students & staff taken in 1948. I believe the school was demolished in the early 50's but later another school was built on that site. I am now 80 & would be pleased to hear from any old students from 1944-1948.

Hi Johnno. I was born in 41 and lived in Leicester Causeway opposite the school. I can just about remember the timbers holding the building up, although I didn't realise at the time what they were there for. We had our bonfire on the waste ground on the corner of George Eliot Road. We used to play in the school grounds, and regularly got chased off. I did not go to JG, I was at Red Lane School. Nice to hear from you. Thumbs up

Hey Norm. I also lived in Leics Causeway for a short time, the house backed on to the canal. From school we used to have to march up to Red Lane school over the bridge to eat the most atrocious school dinners, and get into fights with those rough Red Lane kids. Happy days. I'm 80 now & live in Oz, posted a few pics in the members gallery. Cheers, Johnno.

I went to John Gulson 1945-51 (ish) and left with two A levels. Remember Mr LeQuesne, who gave me the stick once! Lost touch with all my mates after national service in the Navy and moving to Slough.

I also went to John Gulson senior secondary school. Graduated in 1947, and started at Alfred Herberts as a machine tool fitter, September 1947. Mr le Quesne was the French teacher, and Mr Short was the English teacher, both of whom used their variety of canes on me on a regular basis (they had no sense of humour). Sports day on the roof was a challenge - my forte was the 100 yards dash, nobody told me the roof was only 90 yards long. Painful! I also remember walking by the bakery every morning and seeing the bread dough being mixed and the wonderful smell of fresh baked bread. The metalworking and woodworking classes were at Wheatley St girls school. The only mates I can remember from school were Rob Wray, and Dave Chilvers who lived in Allesley. I lived on Clayton Rd in Coundon. I left Coventry in 1960, and now live in Ontario, Canada. Cheers to all.

My mother (Connie Guy) as a young girl lived at 22 George Street, along with her gran and mother, brothers John and Alec and sister Peggy. I believe they went to St Marks School at the bottom of their garden and then John Gulson, and for a time, I recall her saying, went to Wheatley Street School. This was a long time back as mum was born in 1917. Aunt Peg, when no.22 was demolished, moved into no.64 which I believe is opposition what is John Gulson.

Hi all, I'm silly, oh so silly. I am friendly with an elderly gent who attended John Gulson school, he's now 91. I'm so silly, because I thought that Wheatley Street School was the original John Gulson School. Whatamistakatomaka. That's another detention.

In 1937, girls at John Gulson School were transferred to Wheatley Street School. Then John Gulson was a boys only school and Wheatley Street was girls only. From the Midland Daily Telegraph.

Thank you for that, Anne. I've been looking for a map location of the John Gulson School in Leicester Causeway, but not found anything yet.
