I took a similar photo in March 2008, and in addition one of the notice on the box:

Posted a letter today (a rare event) and noticed that the pillar box outside the Walk-In Centre is "anonymous" and presumably Victorian despite the new setting. Peter.

A post box from the reign of Queen Victoria. The location was originally at the centre of a small village but it was long ago swallowed up into the suburbs of the city. Situated at the junction of Aldermans Green Rd and Co-Operative St the post box sits in the wall of what is now a general store and off-licence but I guess it was once a post office. Almost next door is the Aldermans Green Free Methodist Church, formerly the Ebenezer Free Methodist Church, and the attached Jubilee Hall which was built in 1908 to celebrate the church's 50th anniversary. The Aldermans Green war memorial stands in front of the church.

They don't make 'em like that anymore. One of my cousins has a old one set into her garden wall - what a convenience. I only ever drop my mail off at the post office as we have problems with theft here. When I was about 9 my mum gave me two jobs one Saturday. First, post a birthday card and second, go to the TV shop in the City to pay the monthly amount for our set, which was 'on the knock'. I, unfortunately, posted the money and held on to the card. I was usually a reliable child so I did the only thing I could - waited for the postman to come and empty the post box! He was surprised but actually helped me find the right envelope and sent me on my way. My mum didn't quest why it took me 3 hours to do this as I often lost track of time on my jaunts into town. Gotta love that free-range child rearing.
