Days Lane and East Street

Not in any detail I'm afraid

Thanks dutchman it looks as if there was quite a few cottages behind our property I remember the yard at the back of the foundry and as you say they used it for storing castings I could see into the yard out of my bedroom window.

The cottages were much closer to the back of the houses in East Street than it seems on a map as can be seen in this aerial view from the north in 1934:

By 1951 only half the cottages remained as can be seen in this aerial view from the west: St Mary's church is in the foreground.

I've just been looking through all the rent books, which are all addressed to a Mr Frank Croom, who lived in East Street (Court 3, No.16) from 1922 to 1929, then in Days Lane (No.34) from 1930 to 1943 and then finally in Gilbert Street (No.69) from October 1943 to 1953. The books from 1922 up to 1952 are made out to Mr Frank Croom, but the book for 1953 is made out to Mrs Croom !!! (He must have either died by then, or just left her ???lol). One strange thing, which I think must surely be a mistake, is that books 1922 to 1926 and 1928 & 1929 all have Frank Croom living at Court 3, No.16, East Street, but then the book for 1927 has Frank Croom living at Court 3, No.15, East Street !!! Whether for some reason, he lived at No.15 for 12 months and then moved back to No.16 afterwards, that I don't know, but I personally think it's just a mistake written on the front of the Rent Book ??? The book for 1930 in Days Lane, has what looks like the name: J COPELAND written on the front of it, but it's been crossed out and: F. CROOM written to the right, above it !!!

I also remember Mrs Oswin, I had maternal grandparents in Winchester St, paternal grandparents in Lansdowne St and my mother's aunt in East St. An area in the 50s and early 60s I have fond memories of.

The Shop on the corner would be No.2 Days Lane which in the 1937 Directory is showing as Oswin Benjamin Newsagent - with M.Peacock Boot Maker next door at No.4 which ties up with the Boot Polish sign -
