Thanks to Cliff Berwick on one of the Coventry FB pages. Apparently this is 1955 and the preparation for the new Cathedral foundations when they uncovered some ancient stone coffins. Helen - is that JB Shelton? Also great shot of the interior work lifting one of those internal columns. That is either a scaffolder's dream - or nightmare!

I don't think so Neil. He had white hair and a moustache in the library photos. I'm not sure how much digging he did, especially by that date.

From the vehicles and the copper sheeting on chapel roof, which would have rapidly turned green, I would guess fairly close to the consecration date in 1962. There is the shadow of the fleche in the photo which was lowered onto the roof in April 1962.

Following my earlier query, this is JB Shelton, possibly the best image I have seen of him examining medieval stonework unearthed during excavations for the New Cathedral in 1955. Note the lovely Triumph works building that still stood in the background on Priory Street (c) Historic England

A good one Neil. Fortunately it will look more religious/impressive high up on the wall than it does on the back of a truck!
