I recently found out my great-aunt died in High View Hospital. Can anyone tell me where this was located please, and does it still exist under a different name?
Many thanks. |

Hi Familydigger. From to the website BBC Doomsday Reloaded:
HIGH VIEW HOSPITAL in Hospital Lane was built in 1905 as a fever isolation hospital & was originally called Exhall Hospital. There are now 172 geriatric patients but it is due for closure in 1986.

Hi Familydigger,
The very last time I was at High View Hospital was to visit my dear gran in 1964 and was sorry to learn that once you enter High View you never come out. Sadly for us this was true, but she was able to see her gt. granddaughter for the last time.

One of my great aunts died in High View, I visited her there with my parents back in the sixties and had to leave and wait outside, it stunk of stale urine. At that time it was referred to as being in Exhall! |

My grandad spent the end of his life in High View. All I can remember of it was sitting there with my grandad giggling at a man trying to eat celery with no teeth in. |

Not everyone who went into High View died there. My grandmother was admitted on respite care in the 1960's and came home. She stayed at home after that though. |

There was a plane crash near there in 1949, some wreckage landed in the grounds of the hospital which was then called Exhall Lodge. The main body of the two planes that collided fell opposite the Royal Oak pub by Hospital Lane. Here is a link to the crash. |
