Sorry Johnnie - Alf never scored either! Nor did any other goalkeeper of that period, according to "Coventry City - A Complete Record 1883-1991"
Perhaps in a reserve match, maybe?

Hi Belushi - "A Complete Record" wouldn't have missed something like that, so I must stand corrected. Cliff has suggested that I might be remembering a Roy Kirk goal (https://www.ccfpa.co.uk/?p=109150), but that was away at Northampton, and I don't think I would have been there. I remember Roy Kirk - a big strong defender perfectly capable of booting the ball out of sight! Funny that that particular goal was against Alf Wood! Maybe it was shown on telly and that's how I saw it.

Trying to solve the goal keeper scoring issue, I looked at Bill Glazier and came across this interesting statement.
"A broken leg suffered with Coventry City in 1965 cut short Glazier's international career, as he was over the age-limit after returning to fitness."
Did not know there was ever an age limit to play for England??

He represented England at under 23 level Mick.
When he recovered from his broken leg he was over the age limit.

Sorry I missed ya Steve! I had the same scarf I was wearing in 1987 on. Hope the two coaches we saw broken down on the M40 managed to get there ok. Apols to the lady next to me whose coffee I knocked over celebrating the second. Loved the chap who ran down the row hugging everyone for the 3rd, and kudos to the guys'n'gals who were in the stretch Hummer going back home on the Motorway - hope they had a good drink. Never heard a noise like it singing at the start. PUSB!

Yes, I too remember at centre half a big strong fellow, I always remember City being awarded a penalty in a match at Highfield Road, can't remember who it was against but Roy Kirk was chosen to take the kick. I remember wondering why as I couldn't remember him taking any before but what I do remember is that he stepped up and blasted it so hard that it hit the upright and went out of play near the halfway line !!tillyt

Reg Mattthews was a brilliant goalkeeper and one of my boyhood heroes. He was the first Coventry City player to play for England and gained five full caps.
I can remember watching his last game at Highfield Road before he went to Chelsea.
I'm a bit late on patrol here but yes I agree what a great goalkeeper Reg was. The thing that remains in my mind was that he used great vision and was not afraid to come out of his goal to claim the ball and saved many anxious moments for his defenders.
