Yes, I was looking at that one too. I can't help feeling that the timber cottage sat further forward than the buildings on the right of the map. There is a space for a missing building. The pond and the driveway look spot on. |

There was a photo of a pond full smack in the photo with a field behind the pond, but I have no idea of the topic, the scene was of a century ago. I needed to see it again, it claimed it was a garden pond, by a new member? |

There have been a lot of photos of gardens, rivers, flooding and mill ponds recently but nothing specific jumps to mind. Sorry Kaga. |

Helen.
The picture told the full story to me, it explained why the pond was there, the farm being several centuries old, the pond told me that Coventry Council slapped a compulsory purchase order on it, then split it into building plots, and sold it off. Someone bought that plot with the pond still there, but our new member thought it was a garden pond, several of our members thought so too, when all it was was a common watering hole for cattle and sheep,
Rob.
I believe you made a comment, can you recall? |

I doubt if I'd have commented on this one Kaga - unfortunately it's a location I know virtually nothing about. |

Thank you, Helen. I really should not be on here, I know nothing of computers, or education - lost mine through a series of a lack of teachers during wartime.
About this topic - my version.
On the right of this old Kenilworth Road lay a farm of immense age, when farming was all we had. From a photo on this forum it showed a farm pond and field background, the pond had been built centuries ago, the pond lay near the bottom of the field, far enough from fences for cattle to herd or mooch about - above the pond would have been drainage pipes across the field that fed the pond, other drainage pipes down the field would have fed into the main one, led into the pond the draining pipes 6 to 8 inches deep thus keeping the pond topped up.
On the left of the pond was a small lane and ditch, taking the overflow of water from the pond. On the left of the pond this was the drinking and drainage end. They only wanted the cattle or sheep to drink, not drown. normally the pond would have been cleaned in winter. The plants in the pond were dangerous to a garden.
The pond was badly neglected, this made me believe at some time the council had slapped a compulsory purchase order on it, so the farmer had neglected the pond. The farm was in the green belt area of the city. Over time the council chopped it up into building plots, and sold it off. The pond was in one of the building plots.
(Mods do what you wish with this). |

Unfortunately there are a lot of pictures spread across a lot of topics, so a picture and discussion aren't necessarily where they logically should be. Some pictures arrive with an unknown location and get discussed and are sometimes located, eg there were several images of the River Sherbourne, various grand houses and cottages at photos elsewhere online.
The photos are not ours to post but we linked to them. It may take time for all the photos to be fully identified. It's impossible for anyone to know everything that's been posted. I'm only vaguely aware of those images outside the old city, so can't help much with discussions involving those areas.
I hope that you've gone back to the start of this topic and read the posts? |

Yes, Helen, I have, the picture really was about Coventry Council and how it handled the supposed green belt.
The best picture for me was post 15, what a great start to a marathon. |

1963/4 found me viewing a new house in Kenilworth Road, a vacant building plot next door (Youell's comes to mind), right hand side. |

Re the Burnt Post cottages - I read of someone going to a garden party there in about 1958. It was then just one very large house with the pond near the road and at that time it was owned by a Dr St John. |
