As a research member of the Marie Stuart Society I am following up Mary's residences in Coventry. I believe she stayed not only at the Bull Inn but also at the house of Sir Edward Saunders, Chief Baron of the Exchequer. This house was between the Grey Friar's and Bablake gates near 'Little Pudding Croft'. Rob has sent a map of 1807 showing an area called the 'Poddy Croft' in the correct location. Can anyone provide further detail ? Is there any trace of the building remaining or other reference to its location ? Many thanks for ANY further help !!

His will is on line on Ancestry although it is in difficult writing so I can't read it. That may mention his properties.

On "The ground plott of Covenre" From Dugdale's Antiquities of Warwickshire 1656, there is a building shown on the wall between Sponne Gate or Bablake Gate and Greyfriars gate, perhaps that is it.

She was imprisoned for a while in Caesar's Tower, adjoining St Mary's Hall. The story is told that during the imprisonment, Queen Elizabeth had a painting of herself installed opposite the very low doorway from the tower in order that Mary would have to bow to it as she came out. Mary took advantage of this situation by always coming out backwards, thus presenting her 'arriere' to Elizabeth.
