Who here remembers real parties?

The only party I remember is the VE day party in Powell Road. I had not seen as much food in one place at that time and there were races and entertainment organised. I guess it was the novelty of that sort of event during the war years that makes the memory stick.

Here in Australia we had fairy bread hundreds and thousands on buttered bread and of course sausage rolls and party pies with sauce.

For my daughter's fourth birthday party a two years ago, we hired 'wizardy woo', who has been entertaining kids in Coventry for decades. Party bags consist these days of a couple of chews, some cake, maybe some Haribo or Love Hearts and maybe a little pull back toy or a notepad. And almost always a balloon or bubbles.

Good grief, our kids were being entertained by him at parties in the 70's! The finale of his magic show would always be the production of a white rabbit. Another popular entertainer around that time was "Mr Magic", who always showed cartoon films on a big screen after his magic routine. What does a children's entertainer charge these days?

Wizardy Woo used to entertain the kids at the Christmas party laid on by the Devonshire Arms football club back in the early 80's.

Hi all I remember my Christmas party from this Saturday, just gone. It was held at the Allesley Hotel. I enjoyed the food & the accommodation (we stayed overnight), but the function room that we were in was very, very cold. That was a big downer, which spoilt the event. I have a few more doos' to come yet, all of which I hope will be warmer. The cost of the accommodation & breakfast was very good, better than anything that I have seen on-line, really & our room was very warm. I am sure that I could have worked a spin-off there with some of the guests if I was not so old & past it! Win some, lose some.

We tried several times to book Wizardy Woo for my childrens birthday parties but unfortunately they were both born during the Coventry Holiday Fortnight period when he took his holidays so they had to make do with me instead and my not very good magic act

We paid 45 pounds for Wizardy Woo in 2011... He was very funny.

We used to make our own entertainment. It was terrible but everybody loved it!

Hi Dutchman, I don't intend this to be rude and hope you take it in a jovial way, but it wouldn't be the clog dance would it ?

Talking of clogs, from what I have gathered, the Dutchman was quite young when he came to Coventry and maybe missed this celebration, but the next few days in Holland are special for the children, Sinterklass I think it's called, the Dutch children think Santa keeps a red book and writes whether they are good or naughty and they put their clogs/shoes (I like to think it would be clogs) out with a carrot in for the reindeer to hope that Santa exchanges the carrot for something nicer like sweets. So a magical few days for them. I have been having a think about the party games , which were a lot simpler without all the gadgets. At some stage to calm us down after the Musical Chairs and Hide and Seek, a tray was produced with various items on and you had to memorise the contents, like the Generation Game and in turn remember them when the tray was removed, and that funny writing game where you passed the paper round and wrote stuff that ended up being very comical when read out. All simple stuff but I always remembered having a good time and then home with my Goody Bag as Tony S said with some sweeties and a plastic diamond ring and a bit of the cake in it as well. Well, I hope TonyS didn't get a ring, probably a little balsa wood aeroplane with a rubber band on.

Well we always play Celebrities where you have a celebrities' name stuck on your forehead and you have to guess who you are. That always has us in stitches. My worse one was Homer Simpson. Of course it helps the party along if you have had a little drinkies first.
