Hi Ace Wave I recall "Moby Dicks" from before it had a the name in the fifties. A great hobby is fish & chips, always been a favourite food of mine. What a crime, for it to be called "junk food" by some. Thank you for your memories, Ace. Cheers ps. When Terry Waite was released following his brave act, that saw him detained for so, so long, his reply to a media reporter who asked him what he was first looking forward to in his new freedom, was, "Enjoying fish & chips with his family". Happy

Just to throw a haddock in the works, who remembers Jack Bodell keeping the chippy in Jardine Crescent?

Anyone remember the converted coaches and vans that used to wait outside the pubs and clubs?

Hi again Mick Wave I remember Woodway Lane in the days before the M6 was built & the arm of the canal that served the Alex colliery was still in place. A fish & chip converted single deck bus was a Friday & Saturday night regular, opposite the Jolly Collier pub. The derelict pub was a victim of arson recently. My best reminder now is the old steel arch canal bridge that was moved to Spon End, where it now crosses the Sherbourne.

I remember the chip shop Bodell had (The Knockout?) from working in Tile Hill for a while. The food was always good but I swear his eyes used to start to glaze over whenever the bell went on the microwave Smile

What's hilarious is that one day last summer my GP ordered me to eat more fish! I neglected to mention to her it was already my favourite food and hardly needed an excuse to consume it at every opportunity. Smile

Hi Dutchman, have you ever asked your favourite chippy for the fish without the batter? It works for me here (it does help if you give him a nice smile) Wink Smile

BOTH run by Greek Cypriots throughout the 1970s. ALWAYS top notch! Both families sadly gone now, run by people who insist on selling Kebabs/Pizza/Fried Chicken. Sometimes after a night at The Grange, we'd stop at Vasilous which was on Avon Street if our hunger pangs couldn't be stifled before Moby Dicks (that was always busy with The Devons' drinkers). Vasilous was also a decent chippy.
George from Avon Chippy and Andy from Moby Dicks were related. I too used both chippies depending on which pub I used, mostly the Grange though

Here`s one for Dutchman, there was a chip shop in Paynes Lane in the 60s, the man who ran it was Mr Dixon, people said he was the brother of Reg Dixon who played the organ in Blackpool Tower. I also remember a faggot and pea shop a little further down the road towards the Binley Oak. Food in both was brilliant, always had scratchings on the chips from Dixons
