Hi all, Wave Long queues at fish & chip shops were common place at one time, where fish & chips was a quick nourishing low priced meal. This meant that the stuff was all fresh. If there is no queue, the chances are that the stuff is stale. So, I avoid fish & chip shops if there is no queue. There is little change out of £10 for two fish & one small chips, no longer a cheap meal. The only fish & chip shop where I regularly see a queue is in Binley, near to the old Craven Arms. That is too far away from home for me to have fish & chips from. Wave

Got to admit, we come over to Cov every week but try to eat somewhere different each time. The chippy in Avon St., Wyken, has pleasant staff and serve a mean portion of fish & chips (mean, meaning more than we can eat). Binley chippy (the one Philip refers to) we use on the odd occasion. Ham salad batch in the Market or a pork and stuffing batch. All you can eat Chinese for £7-50. We try to vary from week to week. Just like Philip, if you ask which is our favourite meal is, it would be FOOD. Love the variety, BUT STILL LOVE MY CHIPPIES. Big grin

A fisherman on the south coast told me a lot of the fish that's sold as "cod" is actually the much cheaper coley or whiting. It's legal too apparently as both are members of the cod family! Oh my

Hi Dutchman, That has been my experience too. It is important to ask for cod if that is what you want. Not only taste, but most of the white fish can be distinguished by texture. I quite like whiting or even pollock. Most important to me is if it is fresh & recently cooked.

Have used Hipswell Highway and Binley Mega Chippy in the last two weeks, and Hipswell Highway is still the best, for me, better on quality, quantity and price Thumbs up

There used to be a chippy in Windmill Rd where the Indian takeaway is now, portions were small but the chips were lovely Smile

Always LOVED 2 chippies when I lived in Wyken, Moby Dick (Sewall Highway roundabout where #7 bus terminated) and the other was on Sewall Highway by the Purcell Road junction. BOTH run by Greek Cypriots throughout the 1970s. ALWAYS top notch! Both families sadly gone now, run by people who insist on selling Kebabs/Pizza/Fried Chicken. Sometimes after a night at The Grange, we'd stop at Vasilous which was on Avon Street if our hunger pangs couldn't be stifled before Moby Dicks (that was always busy with The Devons' drinkers). Vasilous was also a decent chippy.
