I found this plaque while digging my garden. It is in very good condition. What did the company make? When was it in business? Anyone got any ideas please?

Could it be a cover fitted to the outside of a chimney breast. The sweep would remove it to enable him to sweep the chimney. It's probably wrong but is a possibility.

On Ancestry they appear in telephone directories from the 1920's to the 1950's but it does not say what trade they were in.

There's a company called Adanac in a place called Woolpit in Suffolk that makes/supplies specialist valves. The Coventry Adanac is no longer in business, I think the premises that they used is now BTPC. Sorry it's not much.

For what it's worth, Adanac is Canada backwards. Wonder if that has any significance.

Not me, but there is a military wristwatch with Adanac on the face made in Canada for the American forces.

Hi Harrier. How big is the plaque? You may find them if you could possibly look in a trade directory, I think they have copies in the Herbert records office and sometimes in reference libraries. If you are really keen to find out maybe Companies House could help you. Adanac (Engineering) Limited which was dissolved in 1969 was company number 00825834, if this was the same company based in Coventry.

The plate measures 3.5" wide and 2.5" deep and is very light, with no rusting, the metal has no ferrous content. As I have dug the garden for the best part of 25 years, I assume the plaque must be a recent import via muck, leaves etc. to have escaped surfacing before? As the corrosion is minimal this would make sense. The holes in each corner are counter sunk suggesting screws rather than rivets, which in turn might suggest it was attached to wood rather than metal? If 'Adanac' in placed in a search engine, very many different companies appear to use this name. Why? I don't think it is a name from classical history, so has anyone any more suggestions about where the actual name comes from to be used so widely?

Clearly its popularity as a company name comes from the fact that canada spelt backwards makes a reasonable name Oh my
