Coventry City FC - your dream team

1: Jim Blyth 2: Danny Thomas 3: Stuart Pearce 4: Terry Yorath 5: Trevor Peake 6: Gary Gillespie 7: Steve Hunt 8: Lloyd McGrath 9: Ian Wallace 10: Dion Dublin 11: Tommy Hutchison I've based this on players I've actually seen hence no place for anyone pre-1976 ish. Would love to have seen the players who took part in the "Sky Blue Revolution" under Jimmy Hill but wasn't born.

For what it's worth, here's my team. Like with BrotherJoybert, I can only base the players on whom I've seen myself - since about 1972. 1. Bill Glazier (Tough choice - Steve Ogrizovic or Jim Blyth were also very worthy) 2. Mick Coop 3. Bobby McDonald 4. Stuart Pearce 5. Trevor Peake 6. Terry Yorath 7. Dennis Mortimer 8. Peter Ndlovu 9. Dion Dublin 10. Ian Wallace 11. Tommy Hutchison Maybe not all the players are wearing the correct numbers on their shirts, but I had to juggle one or two to get my favourites in! And such a shame we're only allowed to pick 11 - just as stong a "reserve" team could easily be picked from the last 40 years or so! Your turn....

I am going to put a different slant on this and go for the best players ever to play for Coventry even if they were past their prime. Peter Shilton Kenny Sansom Stuart Pearce Terry Butcher Larry Lloyd Peter Barnes Gerry Francis Terry Yorath Steve Hunt Cyril Regis David Speedie Subs: Oggy Roland Nilsson Gary Gillespie Tommy Hutchison Alan Brazil. I would have Pearce playing centre half so Samson could be in the team and Lloyd playing right back instead of centre half. I believe Peter Shilton played a couple of reserve games at the end of his career.

So many great names and players I'd struggle to make my definitive list. Suffice to say I still remember my first ever game at Highfield Road with my dad. 1976 vs Newcastle United with Brian 'Harry' Roberts on the cover and the egg timer strip. As such from that era names like Wallace/Ferguson, Bobby McDonald still ring out as heros to me. Tommy Hutchison used to drink in the Tollgate near my mum's. Always remember seeing Micky Quinn in town one Saturday evening. He had been sent off in the game at Blackburn that afternoon - had obviously left the ground immediately and got back to Coventry and was supping a pint in the pub opposite the Council House (was it called Cassidys? before Lloyds) by 8pm! My mum's still best mates with George Curtis' wife and still sees George regularly! Oh and Micky Gynn delivers my post!

As a matter of interest CCFPA do hold very interesting events from time to time. Can't imagine a City team without George Curtis, Mr Coventry City to those of us of a certain age. Does no one remember Reg Matthews, Cov goalie that played for England, late 50's. Lived in Wyken Avenue. Another brilliant goalie was Arthur Lightening. Drank at the Devon.

Lloyd McGrath's soccer school is serving him well and he's currently teaching my eldest on a 10 week course at Bablake. Still lives in the city as does George Curtis

Drank FOR Devon more like. I've frequently heard tales (maybe that's all they were) that he often played whilst suffering from a serious hangover. I do vaguely remember seeing him play in the 50's. Sorry to hear about Ernie Machin - used to see him scoring goals very similar to Keith Houchen's FA Cup header. And of course, no team would be complete without Ian (Gibbo) Gibson - I used to idolise him. His ball skills were legendary. I particularly remember one game (unfortunately can't recall which one!) where he was playing mostly down the left wing, and he absolutely terrorised the defender who was marking him. Every time Gibbo got the ball he would breeze passed the opposing player using his incredible close ball control. Into the second half this defender was getting well and truly fed up with this (to put it politely!). The final straw came when Gibbo went round this player (again) then stopped dead and stood there with his hands on his hips and laughed in the defenders face! I've never seen anything like it. The defender didn't take kindly to this gesture of friendship and instantly landed a left hook on Gibbos jaw and flattened him. Not sure if the defender was booked. Happy days!
