We have just stopped laughing Mick, my wife was the Cafe supervisor and she was quick she used to line them up and fill, big drain under the counter so any spilled would run away. Lol. I wonder? It could have been my wife. Mr Cain was the manager Mrs Southgate was manageress My Mum used to clear the tables, I was the maintenance engineer, what a small world?
Hi Colin, yeah, you never know if our paths might have crossed. I remember Woolies records well on the Embassy label, they were always cheaper than Decca from Jill Hansons. I still have a copy of Volarai by Charlie Drake and Bird Dog by the Everly Brothers. What a great shop, my mum used to say you could buy anything from there.

was the original "Fishy Moores" by the old Exchange & Mart shop?
The original was in Butchers Row Mick but when that was demolished in the 1930s it moved to New Buildings, not far from Exhange & Mart.
It's discussed in this thread: City Restaurants

Hi Mickw, we sometimes used to go to the New Orient (although it was usually known by a different name) on a Friday night, but never went upstairs. About the best thing you could say about it was it was cheap. Scotch Mary was in there sometimes although mostly "asleep" in her food |

Now there's the thing Old Linc. Having never met the woman personally I had to laugh at the sight of seeing her asleep in her food. Was she a Scot or is that what she drank? |

Hi Old Lincolnian, we always went in there (upstairs they had a bar) after playing snooker at the Victoria billiards club, ended up sat with Freddie Starr and his girlfriend having a drink one sunday night. The Coventry Theatre was still going and his girlfriend was a dancer in the show. Top bloke, not like on the telly and I don`t believe what`s said about him now. We were talking about the decline of the car industry and he compared it to the decline of the docks in Liverpool. Had some happy late nights in there and never any trouble either |

The Copper Kettle Cafe that I remember was opposite St Johns Church, Fleet Street. Just up from John Britons Shoe Shop. |

A picture of that row of shops (officially in Spon Street) has yet to turn up anywhere.
