Does anyone know who this group are and where and when the photograph was taken While researching my wife's family history I came across this photograph. In the photograph are some of my wife's relations. They are numbered 1 to 3 on the photograph. No.1 is Arthur Denny, my wife's great grandfather (born 1865). No.2 is Arthur's son Henry Denny (born 1889). No.3 is John Roland Leedham, Arthur's son in law, my wife's grandfather (born 1891). They appear to be members of a club or society. I know nothing of the interests of our relations and I can find no clues in the photograph as to what the the club was for. It probably met at a pub and the photograph was taken behind the pub, which I do not recognise and which probably no longer exists. I have some idea when the photo was taken because Arthur was in the army and did not live in Coventry until 1908 and rejoined the army for the duration of WW1. Also knowing the dates of birth of our relatives we can make an estimate based on their apparent age in the photo. My guess would be 1914, before the outbreak of war.

Thanks for the suggestion Annewiggy. From the newspaper article it looks as though Arthur was a regular at the Canal Tavern. This pub was quiet close to where Arthur lived in Raglan Street, Hillfields, There were only three A. Dennys living in Coventry at the time of the 1911 census, only Arthur, his younger son also Arthur, who would have been 18 in 1914 and an Alfred Denny, a boy of 14. There could have been someone else by 1914 but the probability is that the A. Denny referred to is my wife's great grandfather, Arthur Denny. I have compared the photo with a large scale map showing the Canal Tavern and although it is by no means certain that they show the same place there are similarities. However I doubt if the photo shows the event mentioned in the newspaper. It would have been dark by the time people had finished work on a Tuesday in January, also too cold for men to be in shirt-sleeves outdoors any time in January. The articles on the table in the centre of the picture should be a clue. There appears to be a rather home-made looking crown, a cup (a trophy presented to the group or for presentation to an individual within the group?), and what looks like a beaker. Unfortunately they mean nothing to me.

I can see what you mean about the time of day and the weather but I hope it is a start on the right track. Are you registered on Ancestry as there is someone on there who has the proprietor John Payne on their tree who may know a little more about the Canal Tavern. Also John Payne died in 1916 and if that is him in the picture he does look ill.
