Thought I'd posted this but it seems to have disappeared! Regarding the railway line in Burnaby Road, in the book "We reinvented the wheel" by Ron Vice there is a picture taken in 2002 showing the track between 24 and 26 Burnaby Road, showing the line still in position but covered by weeds and the shed where "Tin Lizzie" once stood. There is also a diagram showing two lines going through Burnaby Road, one half way between the Pilot and Holbrook Lane from opposite the White House, and another close to Holbrook Lane. They join close to the Black Pad bridge and continue towards the munitions sidings. Unfortunately it does not show if they join the main line. I can't post the pictures on here as it is a fairly recent book. |

There was a plumbers merchant on Canal Wharf. It was Arthur Thomas who was a local racehorse trainer with stables at Guy's Cliffe, Warwick. As an apprentice plumber we often went there for plumbing spares. The coal wharves were the stores with a Nissen hut selling paints in front. When Mr Thomas met you for the first time as an apprentice he would present you with two moleskin wiping cloths for use when joining lead pipes. |

Certainly the tracks across Burnaby Road were still used in the 60's I remember engines crossing them as a small child. I think the line used to go to the foundry, certainly must have ended in the works though. |

As mentioned several times - thats the exact spot my Dad would park his car on our weekly trip into town. It was a real adventure for us to make that trip back then.... I remember those buildings behind the car park - anyone know what they were being used for up around that time? |

I believe they were let by Rotherham's to other companies as light engineering works?

Looking at the series of photographs in Covjb35's post, I noted number 31, described as 'industrial buildings in Whitefriars Lane area'. I think I am safe in saying that the main building housed two of the weaving sheds of William Franklins of Much Park Street. I began my working career in 1961 in the uppermost of the two shops. This shot appears to have been taken during the course of their demolition. |

As someone else said number 9 is the railway crossing in Red Lane from the Ordnance Factory out to the main rail line alongside Morris Common. I think they had stopped using the railway when the corrugated fence was put there. I would guess mid 1970s as a date. The red lane canal bridge is a few yards to the left out of shot and The Hilman Imp car is parked outside Roaches Scrap yard also just out of shot. I lived about 100 yards from here! |
