Hi Garry, great to see you have found the best site on the internet. It's a small world, I also used Tony's cafe in the 60's when I was a Servis washing machine engineer. Regards to Dulc and hope you are not snowed in.
In case you are wondering it's H&H in Morecambe. |

Hi Garry & may I add to the welcome that you have already received. Thank you too for that. Do you remember Paul Brown? He semi-retired to Cornwall in 1991. |

Hello Garry, nice to see you on here, I am sure you will have fun. Lots more stories to come from the time we spent working together on GPO (God's poor orphans). Best sit back and feel embarrassed, lol. I have one staunch lover of my stories, Dreamtime. She now lives in Perth, Aus. You will find the people on here most cordial and friendly. You take care Garry, your ol' mate Colin Colin Walton

The Yellow Cortina
I remember the Yellow Cortina incident well so I will endeavour to elaborate for the interest of our historic friends.
If you remember we had been working on a job (can't remember where but we had been there for some time) anyway as you know I did my share of shirking and dodging, but for some reason we had decided to tow the line and keep to the rules, having finished the job early in the day we nipped off to have a look at our next project and if you remember decided we would need overalls so as the time was approaching midday we thought it would be good to go to my house, pick up some overalls and have some dinner.
Having had our lunch and a natter which took us to about 1.30pm (hour and an half for lunch) normal time for us in them days. I seem to remember us going returning to the van and seeing a yellow Cortina being parked just behind, our boss had a yellow Cortina. "Oh no" I thought, "could it be him?" I moved along the side of the van in order to see the reg plate, I read out the reg number as the numbers came into view, it was him, I had this sinking feeling .
My boss was nowhere to be seen? So we got into the van ASAP just then we heard him shout me, "A quick word if you please" no need to explain what he said, needless to say I got a written warning, Garry on the other hand got just a telling off, well I was the senior engineer and should be showing him an example .
Now this is the strange thing that followed, I never parked my van outside my house again, I used to park it round the back in a cul-de-sac, I used to climb over some garages at the rear of my house as a short cut. All was fine until about 3 weeks later home for lunch again, don't know why but I decided this day to walk round the road to retrieve my van, I then noticed a GPO van parked in front of my van, not wishing to be seen I returned home and climbed the garages in order to approach my van from the rear in the hope of not being spotted (I had heard that morning that my boss was on an all day visit with an installer and this was an installer's van) "could I be that unlucky?" I thought. Well, yes I was. Next morning I was summoned to my boss's office, told to sit down, I was given a great interview for promotion?? This blew my mind and my foreman's mind who was sitting with me, I felt great, how surreal? "Off to the cafe to celibate" I thought. Just as I was about to close the door to his office he shouted "don't think I did not see you yesterday, be careful" Well it was funny, I spoke to the lad who was with my boss that day, as they turned into my road they both gave a sigh of relief as my van was not outside my house but as they turned into the cul-de-sac they saw my van. Not too sure to this day what my boss was thinking? But maybe he was using some sort of reverse logic, I will never know. Colin. Colin Walton

Hi, I attended Little Heath School from 1959 to 1966 (three years in the classrooms right at the top of Old Church Road by the Foleshill Road and then four years in the school building further down OCR near the canal bridge) I now live in the USA and on a visit home decided I would like a photo of the old school but found that it had gone and houses were built on the site. I have tried for a long time to search for a photo of the school online but have had no luck, does anyone know where I can find one. thanks ajm

Hello,
Can anyone tell me where in Foleshill Narrow Lane used to be. I have a copy of the 1911 census and members of my family were living there but I cannot locate it on current maps of Coventry.
Regards
Sid. |

I walked from Dorset Road to Pridmore Primary as a kid not realising the Kingfield Road/Narrow Lane family connection.

Hi baffled54 I am sure if you contacted the school through their website they might have old photos of the school, I have always thought the old schools knocked down and rebuilt should put the photos on of the old school, Friends Reunited sometimes have photos, if you keep trying there someone might put one up, at present I can't see any on there.
Here is a drawing of your old school. |

Sid - if you look at Old Maps and search on Kingfield Road, Coventry - theres a list of available Maps on the right hand side and the 1906 one has a decent viewable small map of the area with Narrow Lane listed (pre-Kingfield). FYI you need to subscribe to get a more detailed view but the free image is viewable ok |
