Hello & welcome, I'm organist at the chapel that you walked by going into the railway hotel. The hotel has been empty for around twenty years. Our chapel struggles to have thirty folk for services. The Angel, was one of the best pubs for weekday dinners in the sixties, me working at Courtaulds. It's gone!I I grew up in Wyken, but many of my Coventry relatives were Foleshill folk. All long gone now. Thank you for your post.

There was another student house around the corner in Beresford Avenue at about the same period. One of the occupants won a rather special Austin Healey Sprite sports car in a competition run by Cars & Car Conversions magazine. I used to see the car parked in the street at night, that is until somebody stole it. I don't think that the owner ever got it back. I only ever went into the Indian and Commonwealth Club on a couple of occasions, and yes, the dominoes were crashing down. I only went into the Angel once and certainly did not feel welcome. The Wolfe was fine though. I guess that most pubs were 'self regulating' in those days with the regulars and the landlord stepping in if any scraps got out of hand. As a young man I worked with a chap who was a retired police officer. He had worked in Birmingham from the late 1930's into the 1960's and he recalled the advice he was given as a young constable, and which he in turn passed on through the years. It was, 'Run to a fire, but walk to a fight'- hopefully it will all be over by the time that you get there and everyone will be friends again.

Do I know any of your rellies?
Hi downunder, our family name is Strong, we used to own a farm where St Pauls Road is now, after it was made a compulsory purchase by the then council the family brought houses in Princess Street.
Hello. Are we related ? My mum's maiden name was Strong and the large family lived in a house on the corner of Broad Street but I'm sure I remembered references to a farm at the top of St Paul's Rd. Mum had 3 sisters and 4 brothers and uncle Tom at one time lived in Princess St. !!

The area was named after a farm, which did lend itself to a lane but it was later renamed Eden Street see a discussion here. The photo is out of my knowledge range. Was Coventry determined to be confusing, such that they renamed different roads with recycled names?
I lived in Churchill Ave. Foleshill and as a youngster attended school at Edgwick at bottom of Cross Roads. The infants school later was joined with Paradise school to become the Juniors and I'm sure 'Paradise School' was near the bottom of Station St. just before it joined Stoney Stanton Rd. I believe my Dad's parents lived next door to the school at one time. I visited the area many times to get my fishing tackle from Lomas's tackle shop across the road almost opposite the school.

As a lad I collected 'Coke' (not pop) from the Gas Works in an old pram. Just over the other side of the bridge was a small shop, from where now and then, the word went out in Foleshill that Ice Lollies (Scarce) were on sale so the chase followed before they all were sold out. I suspect the Shop lady made them herself.

The Livingstone swimming pool, a few yards down was a gymnastic club above Farr and Reddy's bakery - this club had all the equipment for competition. On the other side of the road to the bakery was a small bric-a-bac shop, amongst other things the grey-haired proprietor sold Charles Atlas books/schedules. He was well built and an old strong man, circus performer. Here he had a pair of John Skeaping racehorse statuettes that I bought from him. A girl at the gym club told me they belonged to her grandmother and had been stolen, and if she saw them close up she could prove it. I could sense her tensing up - the girl was of a rapturous beauty but of an oddly cold, uninvolving nature. "Well, the only way you can see them, you will have to visit my apartment". She walked away. Then she changes, walks back, and whispers, "I have half-day tomorrow, can we meet?" We met at 2pm. She smiles, she makes jokes, we walked to my place. She hardly glanced at the statuettes. A spring afternoon pours into your heart like a river. She left at a few minutes before 11pm for the last bus. Everything is radiant, I sleep like a log. I think, "Yes, there is more to Foleshill than industry".
You mention Farr & Reddy's Bakery which revives memories of standing with my sister in the usual queue on a Saturday morning which often stretched from one door of the bakery up Livingstone Rd. very often past the entrance to the swimming pool, equipped with an open basket to buy & not crush, their wonderful selection of cakes etc. I suppose you could say that the shop was one of the first self service type as you passed along the long counter adding your choices to your basket until reaching the other end and a lady on the till to collect your money. You then exited via the other end door on to Lockhurst Lane ?

The grey matter took a little time but if you are relating to the 'Wolf' I believe the cycle shop was Swifts ?

I have just realised that I still have a couple of suits made for me by Terrence Kenny, a then tailor in the same block of shops at 'The Wolf'.

I should mention that directly across Foleshill Rd. facing 'Swifts' was 'Stan Eaves' the grocers where, with my sister, we obtained most of our provisions. I'm sure I remember the Broken Biscuit tin in front of the till counter, just not sure whether we were allowed to help ourselves or whether they where bargain priced.

Hello stpauls, Yes, Swifts, very good bike shop. They may have had a shop in the Coventry lower precinct during the sixties, possibly being linked to the Coventry pram shop. I'm hazy on that though.
