I think this is probably the most appropriate thread as we don't have a dedicated one for Howard St - looking along possibly taken from the then new Phoenix House which went up circa 1960 - You can see the Alma Tavern on the corner of Howard St and Stoney Stanton Road - Thanks to Mark Tattam on the "Coventry we Used to Know" FB page -

I always thought the area was called Paradise and Eden St was in the area, and Paradise St ran from Parkside to London Rd / Gulson Rd.

Hi lolipop. A Paradise Street did run from Parkside to London Road but the area called Paradise was up towards Foleshill. The area was named after a farm, which did lend itself to a lane but it was later renamed Eden Street see a discussion here. The photo is out of my knowledge range.
Was Coventry determined to be confusing, such that they renamed different roads with recycled names?

Hi Helen, according to Google Maps Paradise St is still in Parkside, the old buildings, I presume, have now been replaced and are now part of the University.
As I always understood it Paradise was or is a district along the Stoney Stanton Rd just before Courthouse Green and adjacent to Edgewick (Cross Rd).

This one is outside my remit but a great photo. At the Parting of the Heaths. I think the little two storey cottage might be this one with a slightly longer slope on the back roof than the front. I'll admit it's fairly weak evidence.

Helen - The location of this cottage is just right if the last remaining top shops are just up the road in the the building with 'Foleshill Electronics Services' as the left hand shop and the former Heath Hotel next door.

I think you're spot on about that two storey cottage, Helen. The shape of the roof matches, and you can even see where the chimney used to be, where the newer tiles slightly show up.

Hello,
Posted previously I think, but a photo of the completed railway road bridge that replaced the level crossing, still visible in that photo.
Also is the wooden hut in the top right hand corner of the photo, that was to become my chapel or church as it's known now.
Also visible inside the wide road outside of the chapel is the remains of a roundabout, that was the terminus of the No 3 Foleshill Railway Station bus service. The route was extended to include Swallow Rd, after completion of the road bridge, later known as Jaguar/Dunlop & Ordanance works. (The yellow ladies or Canaries).

Hello my friend,
Shanks were timber merchants. Their last stand in that area was where Sovereign car sales are now. Their last sales were timber sheds.
Originally, they had a huge construction factory that was joined on to the Railway Hotel, that became the Indian & Commonwealth Social Club. Upon closure, the building was demolished & a block of terraced houses were built on that land which are there today.
They supplied wholesale timber as well as finished timber goods.
Your comments regards the bus service. The Midland Red concrete bus stop was just inside Northey Rd and until quite recently, minus the sign, was still there intact.
Thank you so much for your response.

I lived on Durbar Avenue, Sept 78-June 79 while I was a student at Warwick University. 4 of us lived in a house. The landlord owned a "corner shop" nearby and moved his family into a flat over his shop in order to rent out the house. On many evenings we used to walk down to the Indian & Commonwealth Social Club for a drink and to play snooker. They had a full-size snooker table, but hardly any of the regulars played snooker - dominoes was the big thing there at that time, and was pretty noisy and boisterous. We never had any problems living in the area.
I cannot remember exactly where it was, but not far from the house was a pub called the Angel. It had a predominantly Irish clientele. I remember the first time a couple of us went there. We had a couple of drinks and people began moving the chairs and tables to the side of the room. We asked what was going on, and the barman said that there would be some dancing, and then added, almost as an afterthought, and then the fight ! We did not stay for any more that evening.
A couple of days later I was in the Sports Pavilion bar on the University campus, and the local Policemen came in. He was assigned the University campus and Canley College campus across the road, as his beat. He liked rugby and often dropped in for a chat.
I mentioned the Angel to him, and he confirmed that the pub was well known to the police. He said that as long as any fights were limited to regulars and inside the pub, no weapons used , then the Police used to drop by but basically let people punch themselves out.
Warwick University 1977-80, Durbar Avenue 1987-79.
