I'd be interested in any information regarding this location, which appears for a relative of mine in the 1871 and 1881 Censuses: 1871 Census - Coventry & Hinckley Turnpike Road (The Five Houses), Foleshill 1881 Census - Foleshill Road (Five Houses), Foleshill It would appear that it is adjacent to the Prince William Henry PH Cheers Thumbs up

First time on the forum and wondered if anyone could shed light on this photograph. I believe it is the celebration to mark the end of WW1 and suspect it could be the Courtaulds chimney in the background. My great grandfather Walter Robert Stilgoe is at the front with the cap next to the blurred man who is turning round. In 1906 they lived in Garrets Yard, Bedworth, 1911 Goodyers End, Exhall, but then became established in Longford, finally living at 339 Bedworth Road. He was married to Sarah Ann (Sally) formerly Adams. My grandmother Hetty Irene Stilgoe was baptised at St Thomas's, Longford in 1921 and my mum can remember being taken to Union Place chapel. He went onto work at Sterling Metals I believe. Any information on this event or the family would be appreciated.

Yes, certainly Courtaulds, picture taken in Pridmore Road. It's rather odd that most appear to be sitting on a structure within Courtaulds grounds. It must have taken a lot of preparation and planning to produce this picture. Don't know what to make of the flags, one appears to be the flag of Japan.

I believe Japan was an ally of the UK during WWI, so if it's a celebration of WWI this might be why there's a Japanese flag.

Hi. I was born in the jetty in Broad Street, Foleshill, but we lost our house in the blitz and later lived in Cross Road, what I would like to know is I have often seen things about Foleshill Castle "where would it have been on to days map"

Hello & welcome to our forum Ozzie58 Wave That is a new one on me, or could it have been the name of a pub? I don't know.

I have just been loaned a copy of 'Folks Hill- A History of Foleshill, Warwickshire 1745 - 1945' by G.A. Cowley, published 2000. In the recollections about World War Two the author says, 'Crope's Houses, a row of four top-shops at the Parting of the Heaths, which in 1861 belonged to William Garner, were blitzed in 1940/41. The local boys had fun in the tall ruins. The Council took the site to build a British Restaurant. Subsequently this became the present Foleshill Community Centre.' This confirms the origins of the current building as a British Restaurant.

Hi guys, can someone tell me the exact crossover on the road linking both areas change as some places state the area is Longford, are off Longford Road but are actually Foleshill and viceversa. Have looked on here and can't seem to find what I'm after.

Looking at maps and images from Google Street Maps, it appears that Foleshill Road becomes Longford Road at New Inn Bridge. Where the actual areas go from one to the other is often subjective when it comes to districts as many people like to 'upgrade' where there are no formal boundaries.

Longford does start from the New Inn bridge where the Foleshill Road changes to the Longford Road, but as Mister D-Di says, away from the Foleshill Road it becomes very vague as to where it changes from one district to the another. Some examples, Bedlam Lane starts in Foleshill but somewhere becomes Longford, Lythalls Lane starts in Foleshill but somewhere becomes Holbrooks. It does seem impossible now to define accurately where one district ends and another one starts. Foleshill used to be much larger than it is now, what is now Walsgrave used to be Foleshill for instance.

Same problem where I live. For almost a thousand years it was called Fletchamstead (a homestead where they grow flax). Now it is Canley. I suppose when the council decided to build houses here they thought the residents wouldn't be able to spell Fletchamstead. Big grin Big grin

Not sure where to put this, it's a picture of some very old footballers from Foleshill. The picture explains.
