I mentioned recently on another thread about the city boundary marker on Stonebridge Highway and whether there were any plans in place to safeguard its future during the major redevelopment work on the Toll Bar End junction (official title!), for which preliminary work has recently commenced and completion date is 2016 This morning I visited the junction - here is the boundary marker, with preliminary work clearly taking place behind it The redevelopment will obviously mean that it has to be moved from this position - there's another one just inside London Road too, close to the derelict house which has now been brought into the open following the work which has taken place

1. As reported in another thread, both boundary markers - Stonebridge Highway and London Road - have been removed - are they safe? Oh my 2. Signs have now gone up, stating that work will commence on 1 November for 3 years, delays possible - what do they mean by "possible"? Roll eyes

I have recently been in contact with the Highways Agency regarding the whereabouts of these boundary markers and they assure me that they are in the safe keeping of Coventry City Council and will be reinstated following the road works. I am now waiting for assurances from Coventry City Council that they do have them stored in a safe place. I'll come back and let members know just as soon as I have an answer Thumbs up

I have just received an assurance from Coventry City Council that both boundary markers are indeed stored in a safe place and will be re-instated once the works have been completed Thumbs up

I worked on the Eastern Bypass in the late 80s and I remember looking at the drawing of the whole job which covered a full wall of the on site planning office which showed an underpass and flyover at Toll bar end I recall saying at the time that it would cause some chaos when we start that the chief engineer said don't worry it's been cancelled by the ministry it's too expensive and an island will do he then said they'll probably build it in 10 or 20 years at ten times the price when they realise that an island can't cope with the volume of traffic how right that engineer was. Thumbs up

Just reading that the work on Tollbar island is, at long long last, coming to fruition. Not wanting to sound defeatist, but I do seriously wonder whether the changes made here will actually resolve the queuing issues we've had for years. I recall on my almost daily visits to UHCW, quite quickly getting past the island at Tollbar, turning left onto the A46 Eastern Bypass, travelling about 100 yards and coming to an abrupt halt in a queue of traffic that crawled all the way to the island at the A428/Rugby Road (TFI/Cocked Hat). So the question I'd like to ask is - "What will have changed?" We are so used to blaming the roadworks at Tollbar for holdups (and who wouldn't?) but in reality once it opens I don't believe anything will have changed. All that will happen is we will have moved the bottleneck a mile further along the road resulting in queues once again spreading back to Tollbar island!
