Coventry spelling

Perhaps not strictly a "Coventry" issue. I would however like to say what a pleasure it is to read the posts on this Forum as people actually take the time to use correct spelling Some of the posts on other Forums I use irritate me greatly as the spelling used is appalling. Using "text speak" on a Forum is both unnecessary and lazy. Right, I feel better now I've had a rant.

I quite agree GVB, it's a pleasure to use a site as good as this. But for those of us who are not quite so good with grammar, myself included, we have three excellent moderators, Philip, Cliff and Tony, who at times, I have noticed, clean up behind us.

Philip Cliff Tony I have to agree with you both about "text speak" - although it does have its place - like when sending texts for instance, although even then I struggle to decipher the code!! Maybe we should call in Bletchley Park But as you rightly say, we must remember that many people who frequent our forum may not all have had the same fortune in their education - especially those who struggled through and survived the war - and who's schooling was constantly being disrupted by planes dropping bombs on them! PS - Don't forget Rob!

It's never too late to brush up your writing skills! I teach adult literacy here in Coventry. All age groups are welcome and everyone learns at their own levels. It's also fun! Note from TonyS: Hi Anne, don't forget to start typing after the quote (Oops - thats text-speak!)

Yes, I wondered who would spot that - but you have just shown another example of some who are unforgiving of the slight mistakes made by others. Moderating here on the forum does not require "A" levels or a doctorate in some subject or other - just a wise head (hopefully) on sensible shoulders.

I would like to clarify my original post on this subject. I have no problem with an inadvertant spelling error, it is the use of text like "wud" instead of "would" that grates my gears. Everyone makes a mistake now and again but on a forum like this there is surely no hurry to get the words on the screen. And finally, just in case you rely on a spell check facility please be aware that it won't always help. See example below:- I halve a spelling checker; it came with my pea see. It plainly marks four my revue Mistakes I dew knot sea. Eye strike a key and type a word And weight four it two say Weather eye am wrong oar write It shows me strait aweigh. As soon as a mist ache is maid It nose bee fore two long And eye can put the era rite It's rarely ever wrong. I've scent this massage threw it, And I'm shore your pleased too no Its letter prefect in every weigh; My checker tolled me sew .

How right both posts are with the spell checker and replacement numbers, I like human error, after all, apart from me no one is perfect!!!

Hello Gvb, Well as a person that has no grammar skills at all I enjoy the freedom of being able to compose a letter / post for this site without ridicule. I try to spell correctly but I am just not good at it. It took a bit of pluck for me to put pen to paper so to speak. When I wrote my first post about Megarno murder I spelt Father as Farther (nearer the truth maybe but we will not go into that) so if anyone could change it for me I would be very happy. Anyway the point I am trying to make is it's a shame for some people like myself, they must have so much to share but the basic skills let them down and us with it, it's like this, if someone had picked me up on my grammar or spelling that would have been it, gone me (as they say in Cornwall). I have two grandkids and so I have to try real hard to get it right, I will soon be asking my grandson to check my spelling. Don't be too hard on us Gvb or should I say don't be too hard on me (lol) I had to do it. Sorry text talk. Let's have fun that's what I say. All the very best. Colin

Hi Colin - don't worry about it, we all have areas at which we excel and others at which we fail (miserably, sometimes) - as moderators, we do try and keep up to the sort of standard which our Rob set when he created the website and then this forum, which means that, from time to time, posts will be amended (I won't say corrected, so as not to offend any of our forum members) where it is felt reasonable so to do. Keep the posts coming in so that we can all share in your memories of this city of ours

Hi Colin, please, please don't worry about your spelling. I love your posts; your style of writing lets your personality shine through. Don't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure your grandchildren are proud of you and love you to bits.
