My Mum used to tell me she worked at the Pom Pom factory which was located in the yard of Fennell's Music Shop in Spon Street. Was there such a place or was she spinning me a yarn?

When I was in a small drawing office in Eagle Street the building was owned by Stan Lenton and upstairs they made pom poms, thousands of them, I think mainly for the ladies slipper trade, this was in the 70s. Chatting to the owner one day he was the son of the owner who started up the factory. It is not inconceivable that the original could have been in Spon St, could it have been Lenton's. I also remember he was a great table tennis fan.

Here is the story of Lentons and what an intriguing story it is, still a family owned business, story of the founding of the company from 1800's It may well be the company your mum worked for. Bring up the document and search for Lenton.

It's possible although I always thought it was a builder's yard? On the left you can see the archway which once led to the yard behind Fennell's: It has since been replaced by a shop front.

My mother also worked there, it would have been in the mid 1930s or 40s. She told me of the hundreds of pom poms made daily for slippers. Covgirl
