I suspect the council wanted to squeeze more retail units into the available space Neil so they could charge more rent and rates. The original Three Tuns was still trading very successfully before it was knocked down.

The White Horse in Bayley Lane closed just before George VI acceded to the throne but there was another in East Street which was destroyed in the November Blitz.

Welcome to the forum Greeneyes, we look forward to you sharing your reminiscences with us. I used to visit the Market Tavern in the mid 1960, usually before going to the Locarno on a Friday night. It was so busy it was a problem getting any where near the bar Cheers Cheers Cheers so none of the bar staff come to mind but I am sure there will be many that remember them.

Apologies if this one has been seen elsewhere.Courtesy of the "Coventry pub's and clubs from back in the day" FB page. St Johns just glimpsed in the background for those not of that era who are trying to work out where this was (probably somewhere within the Lower Precinct!) What is that vehicle?!
