Only the closeness of the Sherbourne and the bravery of Coventry firemen saved the corner bar Wine Lodge. What ever the name of the pub was on the corner of the Burges and Corporation Street in the fifties (it had been scarred in the war) wasn't the point. A meal, a glass of wine and a roaring log fire, the flickering flames light touched the frames of the windows, made Susan Cooke move closer. The temptations which were strewn across my path were extraordinary, even at times alarming. Ten years ago this was a future I wouldn't have believed in. I wouldn't trade Coventry pubs in the fifties for any others, or any other times.

New one to me of The Mermaid on Gosford St - sadly right in the way of the Ring Road - note the blacked out windows?

On the bright side MR. Demolishing the pub is reducing the risk of the student residents from breaking their teetotal pledges.

£245 per sq ft is a bit steep for Cov, but a gross return of 8.5% is quite good.

Helen/Cliff and all - Yes. I noticed this last week and contacted Fred Luckett whose site it was. The problem he had was he had lost contact with the webmaster who had set it up for him originally and had lost control of the site and the ability to maintain/update. Rob and I are in contact with him to see if the Forum can help in any way - watch this space. Big grin

I always used to drink in the Climax on a Friday night with friends and the upstairs was crammed whilst downstairs it was a bit more old boozer. There used to be a Climax engine on the half landing and it was not uncommon to be going up the stairs as a lad with too much in him was being helped down the stairs by the bouncers and the engine would be rocking in its perspex case as they struggled past!

Hi Sir, My memory of the Squirrel was attending a military modellers exhibition, with my now late friend Mick around 1994. I was attempting to converse using French with a Napoleon mounted soldier, when Mick pointed out that he was a seventh scale model. I've never seen such a beautiful piece of modelling craft, ever.

Sad Well, Rob, Bev and I attempted to have a farewell pint in The Squirrel last night, only to find it was already closed up! Not sure if they will reopen tonight for a final farewell but sorry we missed it. Cheers
