Broomfield Tavern named CAMRA's Coventry Pub of the Year

I've wanted to photograph this pub for ages, and this morning I had an unexpected opportunity I don't recall any mention of it in the previous 1000+ posts to this thread Ooh! Just found this on the Courtaulds thread

Oh my goodness, I must have missed the Broomy thread in May, but belated thanks MR. There would be a whole new generation of locals in there these days. My dad would have been proud to be behind the pumps today. It's a good job I looked into the Royal Hotel thread or I would have overlooked it.

I went in search of 'The Three Shuttles' in Howard Street last week because of its connection with the ribbon weaving industry. Where was it?? Can anyone help? There was a building at the end of the street but no signage and it looked as if it may be next in line for demolition. Another one bites the dust! Frances

I last went in the Shuttles with a friend who was looking for a friend about six years ago we went in on several occasions at different times hoping to meet my friends friend and to be honest the most people in there was only about 8 to 10 people at most but most times only 3 or 4 a far cry from its heyday.

Many thanks Mick. I was hoping to get a photograph for my book but I didn't think it would be any good. I assume it was at the far end of Howard Street on the left hand side. Old Coventry and its historic pubs are fast disappearing - no more 'Three Shuttles' and no more 'Fob Watch'. What about the old Whitefriars Workhouse? If that is allowed to go further into disrepair it will be too late to do much about it. I was thinking of the damp - not to mention the graffiti. Thanks anyway Mick Very best wishes Frances

Hi Frances I've just found a "planning statement" on the internet concerning the Three Shuttles all it states is a brief trading history and that it became unsustainable as a going concern and that it closed about two years ago but no mention of future development as there's no date on it can't really be sure when it actually closed.

A belated thank you to Midland Red for the picture of the Royal pub. I've never been in but I passed it countless times in my youth. The land opposite was open in those days, a fair pitched up occasionally but it was basically waste ground where we played, there was a scrapyard in one corner. I see that a school now occupies part of the site. None of my family live in that area now but I'm determined to drop in for a half on one of my flying visits before it's too late. I hope the Royal survives.

Black Horse - sold again

I only went into this pub once, for a friend's stag do - that was several decades ago. It's in rather a sorry state now. I viewed the place before the last auction. Somebody had spent a bit on it. There were still builders' materials and tools, and every room had had the old plaster stripped off the brickwork, ready for re-plastering. The price was too high, and I was told someone was interested in making an offer. On 12-5-16, it was unsold at auction. The next auction was on 14-7-16. It was sold prior to auction for an undisclosed sum. If I recall correctly, Loveitt's had it down as flats or HMO, for 12 people, most likely students.

An update. It was described as a "unique investment opportunity". Planning permission was granted for conversion to 12 room HMO, plus permission was also granted for ground floor wholesale use, with an extension to the side, and multiple residential occupancy above. HMO use provides for 12 rooms (10 of which with ensuite). Potential gross rental income was estimated at circa £70,000 (subject to market conditions - a pinch of salt is always required here), giving a circa 11% yield p.a. (subject to conversion costs). With a convenient bus route, shops and local amenities nearby, the property will be suited to professional and student rentals alike, as the area is very popular for renting and with the demand of both Coventry and Warwick Universities, student accommodation is very sought after. Planning permission was granted on 12/10/2015 for "Change of use from Public House to 12 bedroom house of multiple occupation". In addition, planning permission was granted on 16/12/14 for "Change of use from Public House to wholesalers (Use Class B8) on ground floor with single storey side extension and flat in multiple occupation on first and second floors".
