The Convoy's yet another example of a certain pub company screwing every penny they can out of the landlord making it impossible to make any profit resulting in a popular pub falling to the bulldozer. Angry Angry

MR, At least it's not going to be another 'eatery'. We are always being warned there are too many obese people around at the moment and we have to watch our diets. I wonder which will be the next pub to bite the dust. Cheers

Not sure if this fits here, mods take it off ELEPHANT AND CASTLE, TUSSES BRIDGE: My Uncle was captain of the bagatelle team there. Long time ago on a Sunday lunch time, the Castle was full of servicemen, my brother, also home on leave, went with my father and two of our uncles for a drink, but old man Sephton (publican) was all of a dither and upset, so one of my uncles went behind bar and helped out. It seemed that he had not heard from his son for over three months who was in Burma fighting the 'Japs' and reading in the paper of the way they treated people, and then surrounded by uniforms, it had all become too much for him. His son Ronnie did return safe and sound and took over the pub after the war.

We went to The Greyhound at Sutton Stop yesterday, and I have to say what a warm and welcoming place it is. Roaring fires in all rooms, excellent service and the food is yummy. I always have Gammon when eating out and yesterdays rated one of the best. I shall return in the summer when it comes alive with the boats etc.

Should anyone go to the Greyhound pub at Sutton Stop, please enquire, or look for photo's of the bomb damage to the lock and bank of the Oxford start of that canal there, I believe there were a number of photo's on the walls, but no one has confirmed the damage for me in recent years. Thank you, Kaga.

Does anyone have any pictures of The Salutation Inn that was on Much Park Street/London Road? It was demolished on 21st December 1962 to make way for the building of the London Road section of the Ring Road.

Thanks again Dutchman - was that the original building? And was this somewhere around by where the slip round to Short Street is now off the ring road?

I would love to know what happens to the Bass signs when these old pubs are demolished, aren't some of them neons.

It's the original site, circa 1756-1960. The building to the right of it was also a pub at one time.

The Salutation was in London Road where it joins the section of Much Park Street which was orphaned by the Ring Road and renamed Short Street. I think Transport House now occupies the site where The Salutation used to be? (I don't have access to the large scale maps any more).

The Salutation was roughly here Salutation point on Google The cartoon is the oldest image I know of. On Britain From Above it was directly opposite the original Whitefriars Street.

Hi Paul Rainbow used to be the Admiral Lord Rodney and was one of at least 8 in the same short stretch of Much Park Street, never mind the full length. I'm assuming the number result from the practice of everyone drinking beer rather than water because it was healthier because it was boiled. Eventually tea drinking did the same thing but the booze habit was established Cheers
