It's a Saturday evening

Well Philip, how times have changed. Fifty years ago, as I wrote earlier, I'd be off dancing tonight, jiving the night away at either the Locarno or Police Ballroom and then maybe walking home. Fifty years on; tonight I'll be relaxing in my reclining armchair, feet up watching television and enjoying a glass of wine. (Or maybe checking on forum members!) What a difference 50 years make. Hi all & Hi Mayjan It's odd me replying on this Saturday thread when it is now Sunday, but you are special anyway. Looking out of my window, the wind is in the west, from that direction is the very best. If it cometh from the east, 'tis neither fit for man or beast, or from the regions of the south it blows the bait into the fisher's mouth. The fisher does not bother going forth, if the wind is from the north, but when the gentle breeze is west, then it is the very best. Pam & I are joining our family today at their home. Let's just say it's a Saturday night & Sunday morning. What am I saying??!!! Best wishes to you all.

Whereabouts was The Arden?

The Arden was on the right-hand side of the Nuneaton Road as you headed out of Bedworth, Anne. As I recall, it was directly opposite the Police Station.

Fifty years ago I would dancing in my new dress my mum made for me to go to the Daimler club or I would be watching the teddy boys and girls walking up Telfer Road, I would shout to them Teddy boys and Teddy girls my older sisters would drag me into the house. Or they would tell me if I did nt go to sleep a secret panel would open up and would take me inside, so they could go back down to watch the remains of Beat the Clock.

Hi all No posts on this topic for ages, yet here we are again a Saturday evening. In past times the radio sports report theme ringing in our ears, as in our youths we looked forward to a date or whatever. A Chinese bring in is on our menu for this evening at home, as we are joined by members of our family. I cannot remember my first Chinese take-away, but I can remember going to watch the film "How The West Was Won" at a Cinerama in Birmingham, where I had my first Chinese meal, at a restaurant called the "Slow Boat". One thing, I enjoyed the meal far more than the film which at the time I thought was very "Western" propaganda. It should have been "How the west has lost!" Oh, take me with a pinch of salt. I love Morgana's comments about "Beat the Clock", as judging by the posts on here of late, it is a case of finding Coventry's millennium clock, hey! So what's with your Saturday evening?

Here we go again, another topic from the past I hadn't caught up with. If you're talking 61, then to start with, it was checking the football results for I was a betting man, then with my future wife and her parents we would go to Courtaulds dance. In Oct we got married, and my life changed completely, for the past eleven years I had been a gambling man, daily, and that didn't go with a family life. Sat evening first thing always was to check the football coupon, 53/4 forget the year. Checking the twelve results I have two lines correct for eleven teams, the last team is a late kick-off either team could win and I would have a first and second divi, I'm glued to the radio two mins to go and it is one nil, a minute to go and a penalty, they score and it becomes a draw, two second dividends. The Aussie coupon was seven draws, there is only six on the day, and I have them with an away, first dividend, it paid small there were too many aways. Early fifties it wasn't too difficult to win money Every year for the past ten years I went to Cheltenham Festival in March, then to Cannes for a holiday end of March early April. 61 was the last time. I think the first time I went to the Arden Ballroom was in 48 I was 21.

Best days of our lives - Saturday nights, dancing, got married Oct. 28th. 61. Daughter born on a Saturday, and my son born just in time for opening time on a Saturday morning. Is that good Karma or what ?

In my quest to resurrect some of these old posts, I have come across this one that has not had an entry for 5 years or so. Starting from the first post, in 1961, I would have been 11, leaving junior school and starting Woodlands that year. Football mad. Saturday nights were spent with mum & dad at either Eastern Green Club or Canley Club. Now, Saturdays are curry nights, then doing the crossword while waiting for Match of the Day. This is generally watched with my best friend Jack Daniels!
