I recently bought this postcard from eBay thinking that it was a house in Hall Lane, Walsgrave. It's entitled "The Rest in Winter Time". I've since compared it with another old photo, however, and realised that it isn't where I thought it was. Does anyone else recognise this place? Forum image

Oh, trust you to come up with that one, and a very old one at that. How old do you think we are Rob - he ha ho ho. Seriously though, just a wild guess to start the ball rolling, it would not be in Berkswell would it ? it looks like that kind of area. Not just an ordinary house though, might be a convalescent home of some sort. Don't think anyone's eyes are good enough to read the notice on the gate!!!!!!! Waiting in anticipation.

It is possible. However, the person selling the card had been told it was in Walsgrave, although he wasn't 100% sure, which was what made me compare it on Google Street View to a house in Hall Lane..... Street View After I saw another old card though, I realised that the adjacent building was missing in the above photo, so it must be somewhere else..... Forum image

Mmm, that was no '60 min. makeover' but of course over the years they do anything to retain most of the original. Anyway, I am not giving up Rob.

The church tower in the postcard view might be a starting point My first impression is that it's Woodway Lane - the location of the church and the shape and incline of the road look similar LINK

I think its the first photo that Rob is attempting to locate, rather than the second which appears to be the junction of Hall Lane & Woodway Lane. Although, strangely, if you type "The Rest, Walsgrave" into Google, in one of the many links you arrive at a Care Home in Woodway Lane! (certainly not recognisable as the first photo though!)

Yes, I know - the mystery is the first postcard, not the second, and my response was to that - if you compare the first postcard to my Google link, you'll see some similarities - the church tower and the bend and incline in the road

Blush Crikey, sorry! I didn't even SEE a Church Tower in the first postcard - your eyes must be far better than mine! Even more strange, is that your "Google View" happens to be not very far from where my search landed me Oh my

Cliff, you're a genius! Big grin All this time and I never spotted that church tower in the background of that postcard. And before I even noticed your Google link, I did the same search after reading your post and landed on exactly the same Street View location as you! If you zoom in slightly the view looks astonishingly similar to the old postcard if you imagine the older houses there. I reckon you've nailed this one - I wonder if there are any old photos of Woodway Lane that anyone can find? Many thanks to everyone who's tried to help! CHEERS Cheers Rob

Hi all Wave Whilst in Coventry city centre today, I recorded three pics. One of them is obvious, but what about the others? Wave Easy-peasy I know, but I enjoyed being there this morning. Any excuse, hey! Wave

Philip, I think your first photo looks like the courtyard entrance to the Guildhall, your second is the archway entrance (although moved from another location) to the Motte & Bailey castle dating from the mid-twelfth century, and the last is the clock-tower on the corner of the Council House. (This "clock tower" is actually visible in the "Coventry City Centre 1920" photo on the "Britain from above" web-site) Cheers

I think I might have cracked it! Coventry's second paid Police Superintendent was a Thomas Skermer from Liverpool circa 1860. This would have been about the time the new Police Station was built and I suspect he thought he would incorporate himself for posterity.
