I make no apologies for this not being strictly Historic Coventry...... but may I just take the opportunity to ask everyone to please remember there are always people worse off than ourselves, in particular, those that are supported by the Myton Hospice at Walsgrave. This year BBC Coventry & Warwickshire are looking to raise money for the Myton Nurses Appeal. Every £30,000 raised will pay for the training and services of one additional nurse. If you have the opportunity to support this cause, I beg you to do so. Thanks, and once again, Merry Christmas to everyone.

Hello Tony. Wave I am sure that the members on here are supportive of comments regards good true charitable causes in our area. I took part in the Santa Dash & try to support Myton Nurses as I am able to from time to time. It is good to remember those of our community in need at this time of year. It could be you or me next! Who knows. What I did was a few weeks ago so it really is history. Wave It is just as well that the next pic is blurred, but like your comments, Tony, it was full of good intent. Smile

Wave The pictures above were from the open day at the new Walsgrave Myton centre 2010, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I saw some of the patients as well as the volunteers. On a personal note, it does at first seem sad that such a cause has to rely on volunteers in a well developed society, but when I see the joy on the faces of those involved, even in the midst of tragedy, my mind is open on this. There are lots of local charities which do receive my support but some are of a more personal nature & would not be everyones cup of tea, so I would not dream of venting them on our site here. Myton is a life & death charity, which can affect anyone in our community at random. I believe that makes all of the difference for its relevance on here as a topic, for me anyway. Wave Any comments, please? Smile

I do think the same as you Philip it shouldn't have to be run by charity. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas also Tony Cheers Hoping this might be handy to know : LINK

Thanks for those photos Philip, its really good to see fundraising "in progress". Thumbs up I started way back in 1988 during the original "Cancer Ward Appeal" (when Walsgrave Hospital had the money-raised-so-far "Thermometer" up the side of the building that was visible to all as they entered the site) Smile My own pics from the Race For Life event during the summer this year can be found here

Hi all Wave A reminder that the Myton Hospice events are still taking place in spite of our spring & summer weather, that even the ducks are now fed up with. Whilst our history forum is not a medium for fund raising, however worthwhile a charitable cause might be, one outstanding feature & fact about Myton Hospice is that it can touch anybody in our locality with no man made strings attached. It could be you or me next! That is why I am comfortable with the comments on here. I am glad that Tony introduced the topic, as it has drawn both Pam & me into closer contact with the work of the charity. Wave

Hi all Wave A recent piece of sad news has brought this subject of Myton Hospice into my mind again. I visited their shop in Trinity St this morning, with the volunteers working hard as usual. Oh yes, we have our gift bottle that is emptied twice a year & "feel so good about that" which in fact is nothing. We have so many debatable issues which are shared on here, our forum which is good, but Cancer, there is little to debate about. It affects one in three of us, that is fact. The other fact is that there is little to debate about it. Any illness is bad, ask anyone that can't walk, or see. The cancer issue is full of so many unknowns, which is why it is so hard for the families to handle. That is why I am in such support of our local Myton hospice. My own Mum nearly forty years ago, my best friend Mick last year, as the list goes on & on........................

I think it's rather nice to support your local Hospice Charity shop. I am not a great fan of charity shops but whenever we shop at Cannon Park I always pop into the Hospice shop and frequently buy books or whatever catches my attention. It is also a good place to offload items that you no longer use... Les
