There are several good "artworks" on the city's islands. I rather like the footballers on the A45 island near Homebase. Have my doubts about the Ribbon Island on the Foleshill Rd, always reminded me of a piece of swarf. I think that Birmingham Spitfire Island takes the prize for being the most ghastly. Birmingham should have done better to mark the spot where Spitfires were built. Les

It's a Brummie myth in any case. Very few Spitfires were built in Birmingham when they were most needed, i.e. before and during the Battle of Britain. All or almost all of those were made in the Southampton area.

I love the Castle Brom Spitfire Island! It was done by Tim Tolkien, JRR Tolkiens great-nephew. Isn't the sculpture on the Canley island by Hearsall Common/Village Hotel supposed to be a metal/panel turning machine to represent the old car factory skill.

There`s a super one on an island near Bitteswell. Not sure if it`s a Spitfire or a Hurricane.

I think it's a Frank Whittle jet, unless I'm thinking of the wrong island? Smile

This may be the one - it's just outside Lutterworth on the A426
