Could nt you all club together to buy the Bakery in order to keep it, as you said even though you ve all objected to it, like the theatre they re not listening. To be honest why do they ask if people want to object when they get ignored and carry on regardless , suppose that could make another carry on film if you did nt laugh you would cry. |

The building itself is of no historical or architectural significance having been altered beyond all recognition over the years. It is also virtually useless for any purpose other than as a bakery and that is no longer financially viable.
The most valid objection to the proposed new building is that a street which once contained a variety of retail and light manufacturing businesses is now almost entirely residential.

There would be nothing id like better than to buy that building and make it useful for the local community (and others of course),there is the blue roof C of E church for a meeting place but it would be nice to have somewhere else like the places that are in Earlsdon to meet up to sit and natter. There has been some good renovations in the past year in this area using the existing buildings like the bottom corner of Duke St/AOR and the old Sunday school in Lord St but theres always someone hell bent on ripping out a building just to cram more people into an already overcrowded area, maybe i ought to start the dreaded gambling and get a lottery ticket for the first time in my 48 years Triumph - 'The Best Motorcycle in the World'.

I remember Trout's in Gosford St, they made the most wonderful bread and cakes, I use to buy rolls still hot on my way into work at the A.E.I.. What a great memory, I can almost smell the new baked bread Yummmm |

I think you'll find they were in FAR Gosford Street?
RootsWeb
I'm sorry if that sounds a bit arrogant but I used to live in Gosford Street and am touchy about the distinction between the two.
By the way there are some spectacularly inaccurate recollections in that RootsWeb forum!

I can recall three local family run bakeries. I believe two have since have closed, that's Crescent Bakery in Crescent Avenue Stoke run by the Olivers, Anna's on the top Ball Hill Stoke and last one open I believe is in Alfall Road. |

I found a great shot of a Suttons wagon. I thought 'Gladdings' was a top-quality bakers, the only bakers in Coventry that you could get proper bridge rolls.

Hi all, there used to be a bakery in Station Street many years ago, I used to fetch my gran's and her friend's bread from there in the 50's but for the life of me I can not remember the name, it is an Asian store now - any help please. |

Hi Berni1,
There were so many independant bakeries, that until the RHM big buyouts in the sixties which forced the hands of them, we took them for granted. Next minute they are gone. Our local corner shop has bread from a bakery in Cross Road, but that is all that I can add to this. I think that the big bread strikes in the late seventies, then another in the eighties took its toll too. |

The bakery in Alfall Road used to be called 'Luxury Bakery' and I always picked up one of their bloomers if I was passing on my travels. I used to work with a chap who would buy his bread there every day, making a detour wherever he was working in the city. I had no idea it was still open.On 9th Dec 2012 6:58pm, Tony1 said:
