I went to St.Osburgs school around 1958 onwards. Just wondering if anyone else did. I can remember Mr. Brannigan was the headmaster at the time. There was a Mr Daly, Mrs Heffernan and many more. Lovely wood burners would keep us warm in class. We were allowed to go to school in the snow then too - great fun it was too. Also the gasometer across the road used to worry a few of us as it constantly rose up and down during the day, never really used to understand why then. Any other memories?

Yep, just a couple of terms as far as I can remember, cut short by illness. Have only the vaguest memories of class. Think our teacher had a glove puppet which she'd only let us see if we were good? I refused to take school dinners as a) I didn't trust them and b) lived just down the road in Bond Street so easily could go home for dinner. That was a decision I later regretted and at my next school I chose to eat with all the other kids (well, most of the time anyway). The gas works as you say were hard to ignore, especially walking past them four times a day.

Hi Dutchman. You were the lucky one missing school dinners. I can still smell the stews they use to make with little boulders in - I think they were peas! Can't remember the glove puppet, just the ruler across the palm of my hand. Happy days. Happy

I went to St. Osburg's school and I remember Mr Brannigan as headmaster, he was Irish. I also remember Mr Daly, he sometimes used to walk to school with me, I lived in Hope Street, not sure where he lived. I also remember Mr Baldwin, he used to take us for sports days at Nauls Mill Park, do you remember him.

I went to St.Osburg's school from 1956 and remember Miss Carley and Miss Heffernan were my first teachers, followed by Mrs Branney, Mr Daly, Mr Baldwin and Mrs Heffernan Mr Branney - Headmaster Tommy the school caretaker, who always wore a black tam on his head. Mrs Higgins - who made lovely homemade toffee which was sold just after dinner as I recall. Hope Street was just around the corner from Trafalgar Street where I lived, so Tilly, you will remember Sadler's shop on the corner, I bet!

The things I remember most (from 1959-60) were the split-level playground - one level for infants and one for juniors - and the fact that the church was right next door to the school. There was no green space round the back either in those days like there is today.

I think the headmaster's name was Mr. Branney rather than Brannigan. I remember the tuck shop after dinner but can't recall what I ate. I also remember Sadler's shop on the corner of Hope Street. My mother used it a lot. I also remember the split level playground and the church. My gran used to do cleaning in the school.

Hi Tilly. Yes I remember Mr. Baldwin. He was our class teacher at one point. We were in the upstairs part of the school at the time. I remember the Xmas school party where we had to help him with the food. Happy days.

I too remember Tommy. He always was around fixing everything that went wrong. Can't think of Miss Carly at moment but yes to all the other teachers. I lived in St. Patricks Rd and used to have to walk through town each day.

Dutchman, do you remember the priest's house at the other side of the church. I can remember seeing a lady cleaner there too. Smile

Only vaguely Pat. Since I lived down the hill I had very little reason to venture up Hill Street any further than the church entrance..

Hi Pat, I remember Mr Baldwin as a class teacher and yes we were upstairs too. I also remember the priest's house next to the church. Do you remember when we had nuns there teaching us for a very short while. Funny how things come back to you eventually.

Yes I think I do. Also a French teacher who hardly spoke any English. I got the feeling we were guinea pigs in the making. But it was an enjoyable time. Maybe we were classmates.

Hi Pat, I don't remember a french teacher and maybe we were classmates. Do you remember the little bottles of milk that were always swarming with wasps in the summer. Those were the days when we had hot summers.
