I would like to find out more about my grandmother's role in the Coventry Ragged School. I have inherited a Bible (one of 80 I believe) promised by the late JK Starley before his death to the superintendents, teachers and workers of the Coventry Ragged School. The Bible was presented on 16th November 1902 by Mr. Starley's son. The Bible is unusual in that the New Testament comes first. I know nothing about her involvement and would be grateful if anyone can tell me how I might find out more. Many thanks Sue

There was more than one: Coventry Ragged Schools
A further attempt to provide educational facilities for the children of the poorest families was made in these years by the 'ragged schools' movement. The first such school, attended by 21 children, was held in 1847. (fn. 35) By 1874-5 there were permanent buildings at St. Nicholas Place, where an undenominational day school had been built with the aid of a state grant in 1842, at New Buildings, and at Spon End. (fn. 36) In 1897 565 children and 84 teachers were enrolled with Coventry ragged schools.

I know a little about the Ragged School Movement. In says here that in 1897 84 teachers were enrolled. Are there any records/archives of the schools which I can access? Thanks Sue
