Don't know if this is a Riley, but was my late dad's first car. Any details would be of help.

Hi matchle55, the name Len Pratt faintly rings a bell but I doubt if that is from my father. Is it possible that he was still a part time fireman in the early 50's when I worked there as I was also a part timer in those days. When I think back I would also run the surgery on occasional weekends despite having no knowledge of first aid at all. Imagine that today!!!
Alan, I dont think he was there much after the war ended, if at all, I think he left and went looking for better pay |

Dean, the only feature of this car which looks faintly like a Riley is the shape or sweep of the wing, normally the louvres on the bonnet side would run front to back, not partly in this case. The sidelights are Lucas torpedo dating from about 1935 but most manufacturers used them. The body looks unfamiliar but Riley did make chassis available to coachbuilders who put their own bodies on, so I suppose there is a slim chance, thats all I can say I'm afraid. I'll see if I can get further opinions on it.
Regarding the coach builders, local ones were Cross and Ellis, or C & E motors. I remember them on the A45, another one was Holbrook Bodies, well sited to do the occasional Riley body, one of these bodies still exists on a Riley today. Also Avon Bodies of Millers Rd, Warwick, one of these bodies survives on a Riley as well. |

I was 6 years old the night of the Nov.14th blitz on Coventry. I lived in Ransom Road about 500 yards from the Riley works and I remember all the windows were blown out. I don't know if there was any structual damage, there didn't appear to be looking at it from the road side in Beresford Avenue. I would think it highly likely there would be internal damage as other factories in that area, Sterling Metals, Dunlop, Alfred Herbert all suffered major damage.
My father, Alan Stott, will have been 13 in 1940.
He tells me that he and his two brothers, Cyril and Norman 15 and 11 respectively, would go to the Riley in their school holidays and push the chassis and bodies around.
They lived just off Foleshill Road.
They were known as the C.A.N. brothers, Cyril, Alan, Norman. |

I posted this picture of my grandparents Riley about 3 years ago. I have recently discovered on the DVLA site that it is still on the road. I contacted the Riley RM owners club who have confirmed that the owner is a member and they are going to try and get in touch with them for me. I have some lovely pictures of it I would like to pass on. If any of you car rally visitors see it could you take a picture of it as I would love to see what it looks like now. According to DVLA it is now red!

I love it when that happens Anne. I've heard of a few people who have tracked down former family cars like that. I'll keep my eye out - be great to see it now. |

Riley were in the habit of shipping cars out to the Antipodes where local coach builders fitted bodies.
I suspect that this car is one of them. |

What a pleasure to meet you yesterday MR, and what a great set of pictures. Some of these cars are like old friends who I see once a year at this event , and still, even after 70+ years fresh ones still appear. A great dayOn 20th Jun 2017 8:52pm, matchle55 said:
