Bell Green

After being bombed out from our Holbrooks home, we went to live with my grandfather in Hall Green Rd, Bell Green. This must have been in the late 1940s. Certainly after the November blitz. I soon became friends with the lad next door also another boy a few doors away called Dennis Cakebread. It was through these two that I also got to know Peter Taylor, his brother Jim and his sister who were children of the farmer Tom Taylor at Manor Farm. A lovely rambling old manor house across the road from where I lived. I used to spend as much time as possible at the farm, it was like a second home to me. Has anyone got any photos of the Golden Fleece pub in Armfield Street, opposite the old air raid shelters or Johnson Road, St Laurence's C of E School in Old Church Road?

Does any one know which pieces of green land in Bell Green they are selling off please. So I can buy a small patch, hold on to it, then when the big cats want it for development I will hold out selling for big bucks, then leave the country

Hi, the two pieces of land I know of are a piece next to the Bell Green Road by Clark Street. It's a piece we used to call The Orchard, because up the top of the field, out of view from the road, is a small wooded area, presumably an orchard. We played many a game of football there as kids, but as we aged, football turned to beer and weed Good old days. And the other bit of land for sale is behind McDonald's on the Stoney Stanton Road. Thanks Dosovcov Yep stand together surprising what people could do if stood together what could be achieved. Yesterday I glimpsed and noticed which I've never noticed before a couple of old I think derelict houses set right back, long front gardens just across the Proffitt Avenue traffic lights, on the right not far from just past the lights towards town. I wonder who used to live in them.

Morgana. There were two old houses stood back next to the Green Man, doubt you mean them. There were two large houses almost opposite the bridge to the farm. They had a side entrance but what intrigued me they had some sort of iron motif railings above the door and round to the rear. I don't think there was a water tank? E Branson, a Foxford teacher, lived in one.

Those two cottages on Bell Green Rd once belonged to Morris Engines factory. There is no great history in them as far as I know. The one on the right was occupied by John McKinlay the one time steward of the Morris Club. I knew the son of John very well as we worked together for a short time. A very likeable chap and I regret not having kept in touch with him. Norman

Norman Conquest, have moved from money to burn by JVB, the motifs I was talking about there was the motifs on the cottages in Hall Green above the doorway, just wondered if they had any significance to the buildings.

I am not really sure of the cottages you are talking about. The cottage to the right of the Green Man was occupied by the Pinnegar family but they were demolished years ago (the cottages not the Pinnegars). On the other side of the Green Man was a cottage with a cherry tree in the side garden but that also has gone. The whole area is now full of drab modern houses including the field behind where I once played cricket for the Green Man team. No Kaga. It wasn't those cottages next to the Green Man but the ones on the right set right back just over the traffic lights at Stoney Stanton Rd heading towards town the Bell Green Rd, Sewell Highway, Proffitt Avenue lights.

Morgana, this is all a bit confusing. Post 9 on Stoney Stanton Road I spoke of cottages on the right hand side just past Proffitt Ave that stood back, sounds to me they could be the ones you mean. Anyone know or interested. Did Bell Green ever have a football team called Bell Green (whatever)?

Kaga. There is a team called Bell Green Albion. They are several listings of games they played on the British Newspaper site. They were playing in the Coventry North West League and also The Midland Daily Telegraph Charity Competition. This was about 1915-1918. The newspapers for Coventry aren't online after that date.
