Anyone recall the gun pillbox (not sure if that's the right name for it) in the middle of the roundabout.

No Meerkat I don`t remember that at all. That island was so simple in those days, nowadays I call it the island from hell, and try to avoid it if I can. When Peugeot were still going, it was a nightmare at rush-hour Sad

Yes you're right it was a lot smaller them days but in the middle of it there was this pillbox, as kids we used to go and look at it on our way to Ryton swimming pool, there was a time when you could get inside it until it was filled in. I agree today it is a nightmare, not that I have been round for a while now.

There are two chasses being driven around in this article. They are both Atkinsons, not Daimler. One has a 5 cylinder Gardner engine, the other a 6 cylinder Gardner engine. They have both been fitted with Self Change gearboxes for experiment evaluation. They are being driven by Self Change fitters who often called in to Watery Lane works for a chat and a cup of tea.

Atkinson, a northern lorry manufacturer who also make buses between 1953 and 1964. Eventually they were taken over by Seddon.

I know this is an old page, but I've only just found it. The chassis on test is an Atkinson, made in Oldham, Lancashire as an experimental vehicle - they mostly built lorry chassis. It was given an unusual centre-entrance double deck body and ran for the delightfully named "Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley & Dukinfield Joint Electricity Board and Transport Undertaking", or "SHMD Board" for short. It is now preserved in the Manchester Museum of Transport, Boyle Street, Manchester. Website at https://motgm.uk/ I did try to add a photo, but it didn't work (complicated website, this!) so here's a link to someone else's: https://www.flickr.com/photos/johnmightycat/10613586296

Hi Lloyd, welcome to the forum Wave And thanks for the update. We have quite a bus fan club here on the quiet. Adding photos is a bit tricky. If it's viewable on the web there's a little button on the top of the comment box with a little mountain on it and Ext. Not sure that it works from Flickr though. If it's on your end, you first have to upload it to this site using the link top right Upload image. Then a link to it will be available to add to your comments.
