When I first arrived in Coventry in 1946, we lived in Newdigate Road and we had two scrap yards.
The one on the corner of Red Lane was Roaches and the one up the end was old man Smithie who lived in a caravan on the site. Question |

Have posted this before, but the first scrap yard I ever saw was down the small road down to the 'slough' 1941 time, he made enough money to buy land and build a house, much to the envy of the neighbours that criticised him. |

Roach's Scrapyard existed before WWII, as early as the 1920's. It is known that the Alvis company always used Roach's to destroy their old racing cars and many prototype vehicles that could not be sold for one reason or another. Roach's were charged with guaranteeing that any such vehicles were totally destroyed and no parts sold. In fact parts of one of the 1920's front wheel drive Alvis racing cars did emerge, having been buried under tons of metal until just after WWII. These parts are now being rebuilt into a replica of the original front wheel drive racer. |

Strange how it managed to survive WW2 when I seem to remember they were collecting really fancy railings and everything else they could lay their hands on. |

I remember Skip (The Prisoner) and Hot Dog and WKCB! Small world. I was actually WKCB 277 and attended the meetings at the tender age of 16 but still got a few pints in the club! I'm also licensed now and live in Korea although originally from Coundon. Call is HL5ZEE or US call NP2PU. Ru still active. I'm active on HF - would be great to meet on air. 73 - Simon (Taxi Cab back in the day!).

As I got bigger, I wanted a bigger bike, so my mate who was into bikes sold me one. Admittedly it needed a bit of work, but when my dad saw it he said "where did you get that, Roach's yard?" It was his sarcastic way of saying it was tat. He often used that expression if he disproved of something. Of course, at first I didn't know what he meant, so he had to explain. Now I know where it was. I think that was classed as Earlsdon in the olden days. From what he told me, I gather Roach's was well known as the scrapyard, even when he was lad.

From 61 to 66 I went to school with a Peter Bates whose dad ran a scrapyard. Pete had an elder brother called David.
Anyone know them or where their yard was? Mick Strong

Following your recent posts, our paths must have crossed at some time as I lived near the Lime Tree Club in Tile Hill and began drinking in some of the pubs you mentioned, now sadly gone.
David Bates was in my year at Woodlands School, he might have even been in my house which was Smith Clarke but I am not sure.
Some years ago, 20+ at least, the brothers had a scrapyard on the estate which is opposite the Ricoh. |

Is there a scrapyard left in Coventry these days? There used to be lots of them: Alpha Metals, Prices, Martins Metals, George Hilditch... plus others whose names I cannot recall. |

One of the saddest moments in my life was when I scrapped my very first car, a 1965 Vauxhall Viva. It went to a scrap yard off Stoney Stanton Road. Can't remember the name of the yard. The car had failed the MOT and would have cost more to repair than it was worth. The engine was running perfectly and I'd just put new tyres on it. |

Despite being a girl, I was my dad's sidekick on trips to scrapyards and junk shops for years. He was a great scavenger and loved old stuff. I still have some things we picked up in 'antique' shops. My mum sent us out for some bread once and we came with a new old car and some nice glasses. We had to go back for the bread! |

Crabmill? That was my go-to for spares for my Ford Pop in the early seventies.

In the 1960's I remember using Hilditch for scrap, as I remember somewhere in Hillfields and also opposite Rootes at Ryton. |
