Ford Street and Lower Ford Street

Another bit of that old row as it was coming down - all part of the clearance work for Sky Blue Way -

I know it's been a while since you mentioned the Welsh Chapel Prof but you can see it here -

....and again on CD on the corner of Ford and Priory Street - shame that building on the corner appears to have lost its LH windows?! I know this is technically just Ford St and we have a separate thread for that but this is where the reference to the Chapel was..............

I do believe my old No 7 bus stop is/was just out of sight on the left. Ahhhhh, memories. Do correct me if I am wrong.

I'm trying to get my bearings. If I'm correct I used to cross this junction on my way from the Art college to Fred Kilpatrick's cafe at the end of the row on the left ?????? Happy times

RE: Alice Arnold (Coventry Mayor 1937) ~Was looking around the Earlsdon Festival today and came across a yellow Coventry Women's Research group book (of which the title I've forgotten). Just flicking through I landed on a random page regarding the old mayor, Alice Arnold. On her entry, my eyes caught sight of "10 Lower Ford Street", which is the same address as my Grandad's old Joke shop (my account's namesake). Apparently she had owned the shop in the early 1930's (1933- 1936???) as a fruit and veg shop. She didn't own it long as her council duties made working there difficult due to time constraints. Alice Arnold (Wiki) Very interesting lady, did a lot for women's rights (especially in the workplace). Swanswell and St. Paul's Councillor in 1920's, elected in 1919. Coventry Mayor in 1937. Passed away 1955. Late last year a blue plaque was installed at 28 Short Street where she lived (which by serendipity I'd photographed last month ) BBC News article, 2024

I have scanned virtually all the photos & references on this site but could not find any sight of, or reference to, the shop that my wife (then to be) had to walk to for her place of work each morning from her home in Stoke Aldermoor !! The Ladies Hairdressers 'Rene Gilbert' Lower Ford St. I'm in hope that there might still be some elderly lady out there who can remember having been attended by Doreen !

Thanks Helen. You are a treasure of information, although the shop looks as though it has been through the mill more than a little since the sixties.

The description of the driving tutor and his partner fits very well as those that taught me to drive in early 50s. It was certainly Central School of Motoring and were then based just on the left inside Holyhead Rd. Two instances of his teaching that I vividly remember were that he would without warning Pinch My Ear. he said it was to test reactions !! The other time when taken for my driving test at the Test Centre which was then on Queens Road along The Butts. After passing the tec exam indoors I went to join my tutor and the car and in front of the examiner he told me to 'bring the car back to the office when you have passed' !! So NO pressure then. Fortunately I did pass and duly returned the car to Holyhead Road.
