Brilliant Dutchman, That is a real blast from the past. Both Pendleton and Sherlock are exactly as I remember them.

As a kid we had twelve blocks of wood in a tray, each block was a two-inch cube, each face of the cube was a picture, you turned the blocks until you had all twelve as one picture, you turned them each until you had a different picture, easy for small kids to learn. We also had a draughts board cut into various pieces to assemble back to a draughts board.

First I've seen of this topic. Tippet, someone knocked the tippet and we all ran and hid. The tacks in the bobbin, we twisted wool round the tacks and they went down the bobbin hole, we made lengths of them sewed them together like a giant sausage and used them to stop the draughts at the bottom of the door. Cut old clothes into four inch strips, tacked them through sacking making a small carpet, there was a special tool for this (forget the name). Can-can or cannit, place a tin on the floor, boot as far as possible just to annoy neighbours.

Threading wool through two discs of cardboard to make the pom pom for the hat that mum had knit for me

I did an art project of marine creatures in black and white. I made a sea urchin made out of a black pom pom and black cocktail sticks. I also made one of those slender arm star fish and wanted to do the arms in French knitting but couldn't remember how to do it. In the end I platted the arms but it would have been better with woolly tubes.

Or a 'punch needle' maybe??? A bobbin is what holds the thread on a sewing machine (once you know the way how to thread it)!!!

I think we just called the tool a rug hook. French knitting was done on a cotton reel. Needs to be an old wooden one. You can't knock the little nails into a plastic one!

Dreamtime What a topic - little bit of tongue in the cheek there, I think. You don't think the real answers are going to come on this forum. Women - there is nothing so intriguing, interesting, warming, charming, ego building, crushing, and everything else in this world for a BOY of all ages. A woman has first place, from the smallest boy to the oldest man. The 'Boys Own' paper appeared in 1879, published by the religious tract society, to encourage morality amongst boys, The Magnet ran until the end of WWII. WWI showed that women could do what men could do (apart from play fountains) and that ended men's domination and was a triumph for the Suffragettes and the vote. Women got their rightful place in this world. But some men still like to dominate, and try and own a woman - not for me. And Coventry had some of the nicest, warmest women you could wish to meet, and share with. With two wars in one generation there was a large surplus of women, and life was fully entertaining.

Kaga, don't think that Elton John amongst many others would agree with your statement below? "A woman has first place, from the smallest boy to the oldest man".
