As you all know, England's patron saint was born in Coventry and Caludon Castle was his home. *** HONEST ***

Because of the link with Coventry (Caludon Castle) I feel that I can wish all forumites a Happy St George's Day. I wonder if I am the only person wearing a Red Rose? |

St. George's Day is the traditional day for picking Dandelions, if they are gathered on St. George's Day, the wine should be ready for Christmas! |

Hi gangan, I can reliably inform you that I too am sporting a red rose in honour of St George's Day. However, here in deepest Cornwall it is somewhat akin to a red rag to a bull, given that the Cornish maintain that they are a country apart. Funny that........ they all shout for England at Football and Rugby! I wear my rose with pride and will for ever be a proud Englishman |

Hi Beesman
Thank you for your post. I was wearing my red rose bowtie today. I was once told that the basic St. Georges uniform for gents is basically the classic three piece suit which I wore as did my male colleagues in my office days. Can someone add to this?
ps. Happy pasty day to you, as Pam & I have a Coventry God cake for our tea. |

From "Reliques of Ancient Poetry" by Bishop Percy 18c
In Coventry some time did dwell a Knight of worthy fame
High Steward of this noble realm, Lord Albert was his name
He sought a meaning of his dream from the sorcerer of the woods
For he saw all of Caludon dressed in drapes and hoods
THE PROFECY
His name advanced in future time on banner shall be borne
but, lo! thy lady's life will pass when the child is born
T'was further said the boy who's fame would know no shores
would prove most dreadful to his foes and terrible in wars.
Gypsies camped in yonder fields, took him so they say.
Who bought him up in feats of arms and every martial play.
In wars he fought and came renowned for vanquishing the evil strong
would protect the weak and Christian right and defeat the heathen throng.
He sallied forth to countries far with choice of sword and dove,
t'was here he met a daughter royal with whom he fell in love.
Her land besieged by dragon flag, the people tired and ill
he rallied all the land one day as their champion he did kill.
This Grecian beauty he did wed as the crowd did sing his praise
the King bestowed all favours great this the chronicler says.
He set her on a palfry steed and to England came with speed
and many years of life did see and lived their lives in Coventry
for centuries on for righeous deeds to his name they did forge
this Englander's fame earned praise from Rome, Salute ! all hail ! St. George.
