Reckon you are right, Rob, though it’s strange - I remember the period and the Drill Hall etc. but not that bit in Cliff's piccy. Funny what the mind does with age! That aerial is also great as it shows there was still one great old building left from what would've been Fleet Street, left still standing (but seemably not for much longer!) opposite St John's - even with the Precinct completed. I think that might have been one near to where we've seen those old images of Conduit Yard and that really early wet plate image you found of St John's itself, if you recall.

Neil, our age difference!! - I recall it better from the image I posted, that stretch on the left was the main QVR down to the crossroads at Spon Street/Holyhead Road. Because we’d left Cov mid70s, I can’t actually recall what the right hand stretch was like, until the redevelopment much later.

IIRC, the building Neil has put the cross against was a public house.

I think that the one with the X is the George IV. Pubs were often the last to be demolished and the building was newer (1931) than all its neighbours. The building was set back from Fleet Street by a building depth and had a mock Tudor front.

Using Rob's 'Now & Then' feature on this website, there's an image of Fleet Street which, when compared to its modern-day counterpart, looks like it might be the same pub in question but photographed at ground level?
OddSock: Particularly interested in the family surnames Cowley, Shale, & Pratt in Coventry!

Dean Nelson has recently been handed some old Cov photo albums, and more treasures keep turning up. I know we have some views of the Drill Hall but this is an excellent aspect in colour looking from Greyfriars Road.

Super photo Neil. It surely could have been saved for different use, but that's Coventry all over, alas.

Looking at the photograph from Dean, this isn't Drill Hall, even though we were told it was. If not, any ideas?

Thursday 22nd June was 1911, the day of the Coronation of George V. Newspaper articles do say the old people’s party for over one thousand people was held in the Drill Hall. The hall was decorated by the police.

Beyond the front range of buildings there was a big warehouse style building that would fit the photo. Britain From Above.

I went to the wrestling once in the Drill Hall, Helen and as far as I can remember that was in a big room. I suppose the original use would have been for drilling soldiers which would take a lot of space
