I've just released a new page onto the "Photo mysteries" section of Historic Coventry, which you might be interested in. There are 13 great group photos, most of which appear to be in or around the Holbrooks / Keresley area, although some might be from other areas. I've placed a convenient button on the left hand menu that links directly to these Group photos. If anyone recognises someone or can identify one or two of the more obscure groups, please pop back to this topic and share your thoughts. Cheers, Cheers Rob

Could the Archery group one be from the Dunlop site, I remember in the 80's the sports ground on the corner of Beake Ave and Burnaby Road used to have a line of full size targets in the field. Obviously the photo is older than the 80's but might be the same club/group. Also on a similar connection to the Home guard my brother in law has this Royal Warwickshire cap badge for the home guard of Swallow Sidecars at Holbrook Lane, with the Antelope.

The group of 'nurses' look to me like 'St Johns Ambulance' people. They had a hall in Wheelwright Lane (an extension of Holbrook Lane past Hen Lane) in the 1950s. They also had a thriving group that met at Jaguar Daimler. My old boss, Wilf Heath, was one of their leading lights.

Hi Bryn, Hi all Wave That is now the site of Holbrooks Health Team surgery. Wave The late Alf Johnson & his first wife Muriel were leading lights there when it was St Johns, until Muriel died in the seventies. Sad She was a lovely lady.

I have had a friend who shoots bows and arrows (ex England team) researching the photograph of bowmen. This is the consensus of opinion of some six bowmen. Photo is of the members of the Ansty & Shilton Archery Club taken on the steps of the Pavilion at the Woodmen of the Forest of Arden Ground at Meriden, probably for a competition with the Woodmen. The ground at Meriden has been used for archery since 1785. It is thought that the photo was taken in late 40`s probably 1946-7 The people in the photo are not members of the Woodmen of Meriden (not dressed well enough) "In 1848 The Woodmen of the Forest of Arden resolved that a pair of targets and bosses be presented to the new society established amongst the villagers of Ansty and Shilton under the title of "The Woodmen of Ansty and Shilton in the Forest of Arden" The Ansty and Shilton archery club no longer exists. Hope that this is of interest.

Hi I am very new to this site, only finding it today, so please excuse me if I make a few mistakes. I was interested to discover that there were photos of people and groups needing to be recognised! I wondered if the photo of the Keresley and Holbrooks Home Guard photo 1 could contain an image of my father. He served in the Home Guard and was - I think - based at Courtaulds, where he worked, informing me that he sounded the sirens when an air raid was coming. I think one of the people in the shot could be him but was wondering if anyone - a long shot I know - could shed any light on where the photo was taken? Kind regards, Little Nut Blush
